Sparrows and chi-chi birds at 4 with a Daisy BB gun. I used to roam the countryside stalking and shooting birds with a BB and pellet gun. Squirrels and rabbits too. Many will laugh but I really think that taught me more about hunting and the outdoors than anything I have ever done since. I knew every bird's call in east TX by the time I was 5 or 6. Good memories.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

BB gun... lizards and sparrows and I'd bet I shot close to 4 million of those big locust, that's why you don't hear them any more, I wiped them out!
22....... bull frogs and squirrel

tweety birds with bb gun and then squirrels with a .22. I think a lot of this small game hunting is where hunting skills are really learned. So many of today's kids dont know how to hunt. They are started on deer right away. While they may shoot very well they dont learn hunting skills.

Varmits. First kill was a raccoon at one of our poultry houses. I sat out there a long time waiting to get that guy that was killing our chickens. .22 rifle did the job.

Shot any bird that would fly into the backyard with a pellet gun. I would line them up on the picnic table throughout the day. There was a parrot that got loose and flew around torn for several weeks. I shot him a few times but it didn't much phase him. Should of pumped it up about 20 times I guess. On to squirrels and then to deer. Shot first deer when I was 10.

Squirrels and ducks. Grew up on Caddo so we would hunt ducks till the kids got cold then go to an island to hunt squirrels. Then back to the blind to finish up the day. It was great, we always had the 22 and the 20 in the boat with us.

I always hunted deer with my dad(went with him while he hunted) but I actually got to hunt dove first.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

birds, bugs, tin cans with BB gun until i was 7 and shot my first deer. (doe) THen a few more each year and finally my first buck, a 6 point.....hooked every since. Dove, turkey, exotics, you name it......my dad always included me and i can still remember the conversation in the cabin the mornign i shot my first deer. he told me that no mater what i decided to do, he was proud of me and alwasy enjoyed going hunitng together. he made it fun. so when that doe came out, i didnt feel any pressure.....Thank DAD!!!
i really think that the way i started out with deer hunting is the way to go. start small, a doe, or spike and teach the kids the meaning and responsibilty of hunting and shooting an animal and how to take care of them. i see people that have a 6 year old kid and they shoot a 180" deer for their first deer, that is fine and dadny, but what do they have to look forward to....JMO

Squirrels, First two years my dad would only let me go with him. No gun. Had to learn to sit still, walk quietly and look and listen. Then I was taught about gun safety and how to handle a single shot 22 which was passed down from my Grandfather. When I passed the 22 test, I was given a single shot 410 etc etc. Later I was taught how to hunt with dogs on Quail and rabbits. Best Teacher I ever had on any subject.
