I am travelling to Wyoming to bowhunt antelope in a week and was wondering if anyone has ever used a pop up blind on a waterhole to hunt antelope? If so, does the blind need to be by the waterhole for awhile for them to get used to it or will they come up to the waterhole unafraid? What type of pop blind would travel inside a large suitcase?

I have bowhunted antelope a few times in New Mexico. They have a two-day hunt so I would hunt with a bow on Saturday and pull the thunderstick out for the Sunday hunt before heading back to Texas. Based on the reactions I saw from Roswell area antelope I would think your blind needs to be there for a while to allow the lopes to get used to its presence. Not sure, but that would be my guess.

Ooops! I just saw the date of your post and realize that you have already gone! Well, how did the hunt go?

Well, I just got back last night, which would be tuesday night and I bagged a P&Y on saturday morning, which was opening morning in wyoming. He green scored 76 2/8. I shot him at 45 yards. Three other guys with me took antelope as well, but with a rifle. Only one of theirs was larger than mine. My antelope came right into the decoy I had put out and never paid the blind any attention.

Terrific! Arrowing an antelope of any size is a tremendous accomplishment. I am posting a photo of the first antelope I ever shot - not with a bow - but with a .308! He was running and I hit him with my 3rd of 3 shells chambered.

Thats a beauty, great cutters and width. One of my buddies took his antelope at 300 yards with his 270. I talked to my other buddy who is up there guiding until saturday and they were hunting in 5 inches of snow as of noon today. Looks like we picked a good day to get out.

Welcome to The Forum. That is great news about the Pronghorn and that sounds like a great buck. I really can't imagine hunting them with a bow. I have taken 5 over the years, my best was 75 4/8 points and I got it up on the Rita Blanca Grasslands on the draw hunt that TP&W does up there.
CONGRATULATIONS, as much as I like hunting Javelina, speed goats are my favorite.

Wow speed goat with a bow. That ranks 2nd to caribou with a bow on my dream hunt list.

Do they taste like sage? I have heard the meat isn't that good. Some friend of mine hunted a few in Wyoming a year ago and the meat they said they ate wasn't all that good.

It is good if it is fixed right, but you can't really cook it the same way you do deer meat. Lora and I love the stuff, our friends up in Colorado won't touch it.

The meat is usually very dark. If it is not taken on high sage it is usally OK.The ones we take in N E New Mexico on the ground level sage are excellant eating. Better than most whitetails.

The antelope I butchered myself were always great table fare. The ones I had processed for me were not. I concluded that cutting through the bone may have been the reason as I always trimmed around the bone and the butcher would slice steaks through the bone.
