Has anyone had any luck on LBJ National Grasslands outside of Denton in the past? I haven't been able to find a lease for turkey this season and was thinking about giving LBJ a shot. I live in Dallas so it's gonna be a little bit of a haul. Thoughts?

We killed 13 in one season down there four year's ago. In the past 3 season's we have only killed 3 total. I can say it is the only place that I have hunted turkey's where you will see a coyote everytime you go. Yote's have really put a slam on the population down there.I took a youth hunter off of this forum out there last spring to prove a point to the rest of this forum that there are alot of bird's down there and I didn't let anyone down as we had 8-10 gobbler's answering us right at daylight. So my overall thought's would be that yes they are there you just have to know where to look and get off the beaten path.

Yes, you can hear them gobble. Only problem is, 95% of those gobbles you are hearing are on surrounding private land. The Grasslands are becoming the Wastelands, in turkey numbers that is.

You dont want a Gobbling turkey on Public land. Find one with Hens that wont gobble. The ones that gobble draw a BIG crowd.

I here ya about attracting everyone with a gobbling turkey. I'm thinking of riding up there this weekend. Any suggestions on spots to focus on for finding the elusive thunder chicken? Went to my place in Alabama and killed 2 good birds this past weekend.

As a lot of folks know Preston Pittman was shot twice gobbling on public land. Ya gotta wonder about a man that didn't learn the first time.

We have hunted there 3 years and it is hard work, it is truly hunting you may encounter other hunters, horseback riders, survey crews, cows or a number of other obstacles. But I go back every year because it is real hunting. Probably are not going to hear a bunch of gobbling. I would recommend getting away from the main area (900 roads). Good luck be safe

Good news heard some Gobbling on LBJ on opening day. That in itself can be a successful hunt there for me.

Ed, was it pretty crowded opening weekend? Anybody bag any birds? I was in south Texas hunting. I have one Texas tag left and I have already taken my two gobbler limit in Louisiana, so I'm considering giving LBJ a try. I was successful there a couple years ago, but last year was a bust.

Well when I got to the area. There was one car. Not bad big enough area. I saw their tracks in the wet grass and headed the other direction. By the time I left there were 5 vehicles and the other early hunter was coming out of the woods. He said the other guys walked right by his Decoy and set up about 50 yds away. I imagine it will tone down in a couple weeks and if you can go during the week you will find fewer and mostly serious hunters.
