When does the season begin? And how much does one have to worry about snakes?

In the South area, March 15th. In the North, March 29th. For the Easterns, April 1rst.
Wearing snake boots depends on the area and your knowledge of it. If you're hunting a new area, by all means, wear some protection.

Im not saying snake boots are bad but common sense will keep u out of trouble. Ive never ran into a true rancher or farmer that wore them

I think you have the dates by now. Worrying about snakes is really based on your fear level. I don't know many farmers or ranchers that wear snake leggins either. But if one ever wanders out into the spring turkey woods with me I will ask them why they don't. I don't have any hard facts or evidence to prove this, but I think your best chance of getting bit is during the spring. The snakes are out of hibernation but we can still have some pretty cool nights. This could cause the snake to be laying coiled in an attempt to stay warm during the night. You go walking through the woods before daylight the snake being somewhat dormant and not rattling to warn you. You step he's squished and pissed then your bitten. I am not afraid of snakes I often handle them. In the spring I wear leggins. Just the peace of mind of not worrying about the what ifs and focusing on the quarry. JMO.

I hunt down near Sonora and you have to hunt up in the brush...where the snakes like to get. Nothing like crawling up in the brush before daylight. Needless to say I wear snake boots. It's a long haul to a Doctor. Be safe!

FWIW, a friend of mine was bitten by a copperhead a couple years ago out near Athens. It was April and the ER doc told him that they see more snake bites in April and May than the rest of the year combined.
I wear snake chaps by Wick Outdoor Works. Tough as nails and affordable, too. They can get warm so if I get set up somewhere I'll take them off. Seeing a few pics of the damage a rattlesnake bite can do to a person was enough to convince me I ought to try to protect myself while hunting . . .

Last rattler I shot saw me in flip flops and boxer shorts!
Nothing hunts like a Spring Gobbler.
