Normally, if they get bit on the head or in that area, they will be fine....not me, my vet.

It's weird, my vet said the same thing. Get bitten on the face and they'll probably be ok, bitten behind neck means trouble.

The lymphnodes in the neck stop the poison before it gets to the heart or lungs. Still does tissue damage, but as long as the throat doesn't swell shut and restrict breathing, they'll live and recover fully (loosely speaking).

That's why I only catch rattlers with my teeth.

That's just awful, I hope the swelling is not restricting the pup's air way.

we have had several dogs bit and when the swelling gets tight we take a syringe needle and drain good and a couple rounds of penicillin and they are back to normal in couple of days. works good on head and leg bites

I hope your at least giving that pup some benadryl.
Its hard for them to eat or drink with that kind of swelling. You should consider keeping him hydrated.

Had a horse get bitten once right on the end of the nose. It's entire head swelled up and it looked like an alligator with ears. The irony smell of blood and I guess the poison was the worst part. The horse never stopped eating, so I knew it was going to be okay.

Did this happen near Lubbock?

Poor pup....My mini got popped by a copper head in the face but it wasn't even close to that bad.

He's much better today.
Ate some leftover meatloaf this morning.
We had given him some Dexamethasone and Benadryl.
This happened out near White River Lake.

Please tell me the dog has been to a Vet.
