I have a few questions regarding preperations for our summer food plot. Currently we have approx 10 acres planted in wheat, and we will be planting lablab and iron/clay peas in mid april. Does the wheat need to be mowed down prior to discing or is it ok to leave it standing? Is there anything special that yall do for summer plot preperations?

The devil made me do it the first time, the second time I did it on my own

I would break the ground to insure the bonding of this expensive seed to the ground. I don't want the seated wheat to compete for the nutrients with my summer seed. I would also recommend that you add turnips and spring and summer clovers as well. Concentrate on high protein lagumes that will give the deer protein and time to get your Lab Lab,clad peas and turnips time to grow and mature.

I would also make sure you till the ground and apply fertilizer as needed from a soil sample. You might have to mow first depending on how tall the wheat is also. I would till all the plant material you can into the ground. Lab Lab and cowpeas are will grow very tall and thick if they are allowed to grow without much grazing pressure. Lab Lab is also very viney with the runners and in doing so both plants might shade out anything else you plant. Depending on where you are at in Texas the clovers and peas might not do well in the hot summers as they are mainly planted in the fall with wheat here in most of Texas. Also planting that many seeds into the plot you will have to make sure you get enough water to keep them all alive. Either rainfall or irrigation. Lab Lab is a very drought tolerant plant but it needs moisture at the right times and the other smaller legumes and turnips will be competing for moisture. If you can fence the plot to allow the Lab Lab and Cowpeas time to get enough growth to get ahead of the deer and then open the field up.
