This is my first AR. Traded my AK + $700 cash for the AR + Over 1000 rounds of .223 Ammo. Anything you guys can tell me about DPMS? Any upgrades I should do? I plan to take this hog hunting.

Dump the chicom holo sight and get something more "robust". Maybe a used Eotech or Aimpoint Pro.

I'd also be interested to see a pic of the gas key (top of the bolt carrier)

Possible but I didnt think the Spotricals had dust cover or forward assist and that one does.

The Oracles have the dust cover and forward assist.

I did something similar.. swapped one for one my AK for a full size DPMS A2 20" HBAR. You will like it, nice rifle.

I would swap the sight out for an illuminated 1x4 unless you're shooting at hogs within 50 yards.

If you go with another red dot, then invest in a magnifier to give you a little more range.

Select a good bullet. Many of us with AR15's have killed hogs with 55gr FMJ's, but there are better bullets out there. Since you probably have a full case of .55's (looks like .223 from the markings on the case) you should be looking to shoot them in or behind the ear. No tracking that way.

The only other thing you may want to consider is a adding a good weapons light with a pressure pad on your foregrip. That way if you do have to look for a wounded hog, you will be ready to shoot when you light him up.

Good luck.

For the price that you would spend on an eotech or a aim point. I would buy a leupold mark AR. The only bad thing is there is no use for your iron sights. There are a few on here for cheaper than you could by a holo for. Also I've had good luck using the 5.56 m855 green tips on hogs. And they reasonably priced. I bought some this weekend for $8 box.

What kind of AK did you trade?

Hate to say it, but you got taken a bit....That's a DPMS oracle, which sells for about $600 + a $40 NC Star reflex sight. The ammo is federal brass case, which is about $300 per 1000. So you got $940 in trade there.

The lowest grade WASR10 AK's are worth at least $400 so + $700, that's at the minimum $1100.

I'm only being honest with you.... If the AK was anything besides a WASR, then it'll only be worth more.

The sling, iron sights, bi-pod and four pmags mitigate the price issue. Not certain if the forarm stock is an upgrade or not. I'm guessing he didn't pay tax either. This wasn't a bad deal...

The sling is UTG so I suspect the quad rail, iron sights, and bi-pod are similiar quality. They're certainly not any brand I recognize. There's only 3 pmags, 1 tapco, and 2 other mags.

I really, really hate to call a gun crap after a person has up and bought it, but I think the above posts are true.

My Advise. Take all the cheap junk off. Sell it, and buy a decent rear sight. Shoot the gun. Shoot it a lot. Then, change the things you don't like with quality stuff.

With all the encouragement it will be a wonder if he ever posts again.

Not sure he was asking us to pick apart his deal, I think he was more interested in hearing about the DPMS.

I would venture to guess that at one time or another we've all given up a little in a deal to get something we want.

Who knows, his AK could have been some stamped, ChiCom piece of crud.

Anyway, to the OP, go out and have some fun with it. Your opinion is really the only one that matters.

Wow...that was a nice one... And you can hardly give away tapco mags or UTG mess...maybe add $100 for all of it including the pmags, which are worth $10 a pop because they are great, yet mass produced. But I'm still seeing $1300-$1350 traded for $1000 at the very most.

Our intent wasn't to scare off the OP. If I got ripped off, I'd want to know about it, so I treated him how I would want to be treated--he could possibly still do something about it.

I wouldn't want to be lied to to make me feel better. Maybe this will save him from making future mistakes. It's not something to be embarrassed over; it is an important lesson if anything.

Well, what amazes me is that there's people out there that are willing to take advantage of those that may not know any better. Sure I've lost out on deals I've made, but I like to make it fair for both parties.

First to be clear, the DPMS Oracle is not a junk or crap gun as some of the posts might have led the OP to believe. It's a dang good AR for the money. I've owned many .223 and .308 DPMS AR's over the years and never had a problem with one.

That being said. OP, we've all had them. This was a learning experience for you. If your AK was indeed a Polish UF, the other person did take advantage of you. There is nothing wrong with the rifle and ammo you got - some of the accessories are meh..but what matters is if you are happy.

The lesson is always to know what you have and what you are buying. I doubt the seller will do anything to rectify the situation - typically a deal is a deal and the fellow certainly knew he was getting the better end of it - but it doesn't hurt to try.

Earl

Don't listen to all the negative talk. Whether others would have made the deal or not is beside the point.
Apparently you are happy with the deal and that's all that matters.
I've been very happy with dpms, go out and shoot as much as you can and enjoy it.
