I hunted a place down in Live Oak Co. that was bordered on the north by the Nueces River. The banks were tall and steep. The river had gators in it so I never saw critters crossing but they sure crossed our place, running up and down the river.

The gators were an added bonus and source of much entertainment. We'd throw a rope over an over hanging limb then tie one end to a 4 wheeler and the other end to the carcass of a quartered deer or hog. Then throw the carcass in the water and just as the gators would get to it we'd use the 4-wheeler to pull it up just out of their reach. Kind of teasing 'em with it. Now that's entertainment right there.

It's hard to tell because this pic was taken with my iphone 3gs I used to have, but the small speck is the head of a young buck crossing the Brazos River/North end of Lake Granbury. I was fishing in my kayak and he jumped in just downstream of me and swam across.

Well, if they won't swim the river, just give them a ride...

I've seen deer swimming in the middle of Matagorda Bay.

And to reiterate what someone else said, I take kayak trips every year and have seen deer shoot up what looked to be extremely sheer river banks effortlessly.

I'd definitely take this property unless you find out something else shady is going on. Sounds like a great place.

Tons of pressure right in there; our lease is within five miles of you. I think I know who you are leasing it from as well. Shoot me a pm, I'll give you a rundown on the area.

Looking at the pics its close to the a set up I hunted on the Brazos further south. I saw many deer swim the river and hogs too. One of my hunting buddies sons was running trotlines when some hogs hit the water. They just motored up beside them and popped them with a hammer.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Young county does not have a lot of deer in general, being by the river wil increase your odds dramatically, plus you should have plenty of Turkey to hunt also!

I would be more concerned about the neighboring land. We have a place similar and the people with dirt fields and just a little woods always put feeders along our fence lines.

Are you near Newcastle? Good hunting area, lots of pressure though. Be careful about leaving expensive items in camp. Meth-heads run rampant in those parts. Not trying to dissuade you, just be careful with your gear. Of course they run rampant all over the state.
