That is a male snake, Good find How can you tell? Not sure if its true or not but my grandfather use to tell me that females have four dark bands on their tails and males commonly have 5-6 bands. Wives' tale. It's likely female. Males practically never get that big, the shape of the tail drops off more abruptly in females also. I'm a herpetologist when I'm actually working and not killing piggies... Nerd job.

there is one thing about rattle bugs in STX. Snake boots and chaps dont do any good. They get som big out there, that they just bite you in the dang neck.

that's awesome. My dad and I had two about that size creep up under our deer stand (WHILE WE WERE IN IT) about two years ago during deer season on a warmer day.
They were evidently following a scent trail as they slithered under the stand stayed a while then slithered away.
They were going down a couple of deer trails nearby. Thank God for a well built stand when ole no shoulders and his friend are literally right under your feet. We have learned to keep even our ground blinds at least a foot off the ground so we can see what's under them. Hate to burst your bubble, but you do know they can climb right? Just be safe sir!

On the radio this morning they interviewed the chairman of the milking pit at the Rattle Snake round up in Sweetwater. He said they were paying $10/pound this weekend.
