Going to go on my first turkey hunt next month. I have a maverick 88 I'm getting ready with. I know there's a 3 shell mag limit for migratory birds, is it the same for turkeys as well? And if so, do I need to get a plug put in to restrict capacity, or am I ok just putting in a partial load?

I think in 30+ years of turkey hunting I have fired 3 shells on one or two occasions and that was with multiple gobblers and I was filling out the tags.

The limit is one for Eastern birds in Texas and 4 in some counties for Rios. Doubt you will need more than 3 even though you can have the plug out.

Rio's, and I'll be filling out the tags. I'll just make sure I put the plug back in just in case the game warden is a stickler. Thanks guys!

Thanks. And I read that one, but the part that got me is the shotgun restriction is specifically angled toward migratory game birds. In the migratory game bird list, Turkeys weren't listed. That's what I wanted to make sure of, if they considered turkeys in the same list as other birds.

From the site:

shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing). Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.

a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun).

Magazine Capacity (number of shells/cartridges allowed): There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds, see Legal Shotgun)

Legal Shotgun: Shotguns not larger than 10 gauge, fired from the shoulder, and incapable of holding more than three shells (shotguns capable of holding more than three shells must be plugged with a one-piece filler which is incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so the gun's total capacity does not exceed three shells).

Migratory Game Birds: Includes all wild species of ducks, geese, coot, rail, gallinules, snipe, woodcock, doves (mourning, white-winged, white-tipped or white-fronted) and sandhill cranes. Does not include exotic collared-dove.

Turkeys are NOT migratory birds! NO shell limit no gun limit!{other than shotgun for Easterns} you can shoot turkeys with anything from a .22 rifle to a 7mm mag! and any shotgun you want from a 410 to an 8 gauge! smile have fun!
