I have some traps I bought last year that were never treated and dipped in wax, needless to say after 8 months outside they are rusting.I want to try and restore them and dip in Paraffin wax to offer better protection. Was thinking of using Navel jelly to remove it. Any better products to use?

I would use Full Metal Jacket to dip them in .

I would use a wire brush to remove the rust and then use FMJ as a protectant.

Just make sure your spring tension wasn't affected.

If you are using them to trap dogs----(coyotes and fox) I do not like using wax it will hold smell. I use a product called speed dip, made for trappers. It dyes the trap, penetrates the steel for protection, and will last 2-3 years. It is a cold dip and will not affect the springs like boiling will. It comes in black, brown and white, I mix brown and black for dirt trapping. The traps have to rusted for the dip to penetrate the steel. If they are real bad just take a steel brush to them. I have used it for more than 15 years.

+1

Haven't used the speed dip but you don't want to take all the rust off I use logwood dye and the base of rust is what holds the dye on. A smooth shiny trap will not hold any kind of dye

Naval Jelly. You are on the right track. Very inexpensive. Buy some at WalMart, Lowes, etc. Use an old small paint brush (bristle style does not matter). Coat it on very generously. Let set for 20-30 minutes. Then wash off with pistol grip style water hose end. If the rust is really heavy...after about 15 minutes of soaking in Naval Jelly, use a small wire brush to brush and loosen areas. The naval Jelly will work great. You will be suprised.

You can use reg. Phosporic Acid...like we use on pipe when welding and a wire brush..You are going to have to boil or treat
them for scent anyway if you handle them....and if you boil them
to take the scent off and it takes the temper from the springs, then either your are cooking them, or there is something wrong with the traps, because you shouldn't get the boil hot enough to
affect the temper on any steel..DD

THIS
I use this stuff on everything to remove rust, even guns..you can literally watch it eat the rust, makes it easy to remove and dosent affect the blueing on guns whatsoever...Should work great on your traps with some light wire-brushing...

Take you traps to a engine rebuild shop and have them sand blast your trap. Wax immediately

Thank you to all who gave your advice. They have a little rust on them, not to bad. Just thought rust was the enemy, sounds like a little is no big deal. BTW, these right now are Dukes DP coon traps and wanted to protect them. Don't think the smell will affect them as bad as traps for yotes and cats. I got some new ones in last week and dipped them before setting out, now just gotta bring in the old ones and Speed Dip or FMJ like another had suggested.

Get a 5 gallon bucket (or larger), and fill it halfway with wood chips. You can usually find a place where a chip truck dropped a pile or a sawmill would give you plenty. Put the traps in and fill it with water. Leave it all in the bucket for a couple of months. I dont remember what exactly eats the rust off, but it works and also dyes the traps a nice dark color.

If you have access to a tree covered bog, you can bury them in the black muck - works the same way.

You need the traps to take on a light coat of rust to absorb the logwood crystal/powder dye. Taking them back to a shiny condition will prevent the traps from blending in with the surroundings and also will absorb more odors than a dyed trap. Be careful with Speed dip since it uses a petroleum-based thinner to apply and they WILL need to air out for some time.

Surface rust like many said, use a wire brush and take off that off but not to a shine.

Long fur (coyotes, fox, cats) will respond better to good dyed traps and careful placement (sound/secure) of the trap, than a shiny one which can emit new metal odors. You don't want to alert the species to anyting other than the bait, lure or urine you use as an attractant or a dirt hole or scnet post.

Good Luck!

Tannic acid is what eats the rust! Hardwood leaves in the water work just as well as wood chips!

Correct, you are actually supposed to get the oil off and lightly rust the trap before treating it so your traps are probably just right for dipping. I am an old school trapper and perfer the logwood dye and wax, but most are using a speed dip these days I think. To give an idea of what you need, but you can shop around for better prices or your feed store might have it.

Thanks Guy's I'm taking all this in and learning.

I've been thinking of running traps for yotes and cats, but my lease is 3 hours away. Am I right in thinking that a weekend is really not enough time to be successful? I know I'll have to put my sets out Friday Night and then pick them up Sunday before heading home.
