There is a larger black cat running around Palo Pinto Co. at my girlfriends ranch. They think its a mountain lion but im not sure about the color. I haven't seen it but a few hunters there have seen it and foot prints around a tank are about the size of my fist.

pretty rare?
One of their hunters hung a small buck in a tree field dressed and by the afternoon it was gone.

hang another one in a tree and wait......you might kill a jaguar, if its really black.
too bad crazyhorse isn't hear for this one.
if i had a dollar for every person who claims they've seen a black panther, i could buy a big enough bottle of whiskey to maybe start believing it. you'd think sooner or later people would actually kill one.....
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

The first hunter that actually saw it was without a firearm so he wanted nothing to do with it.
Then my girlfriends parents saw it near a fence line at the end of their property.
So whatever it is i'd be curious. All i have seen is the foot prints and no joke they were huge.

There is definitely a possibility of it being a melanistic mountain lion. Granted the possibility exists even though nobody has ever killed one, (it would make a nice mount though). One biologist on TPWD suggests this possibility if you look into the TPWD website under black panthers.

You will if it is a black panther! That's what sets their prints apart from their lighter cousins.

Yep! Unless the panther was chasing something. Most sightings of Black Panthers turn out to be big Farrel cats

I was fishing one time off a pier at lake Livingston when a trotliner came in with a 25lb channel cat. Later a young man in his 20's came down the pier and asked if anyone had any luck. After I told him about the catfish, he informed me that that was impossible because he had never seen a channel cat that big!!! Just because you haven't seen it, that doesn't mean it doesn't exists!!! BTW, mountain lions have the same genetic make up as jaguars, so they can suffer from the genetic disorder of melanism!!!
