took both of my ar's out to the range today and given it was windy as all get out I need to figure out what is going on here.

on my 6.8 at 50 yards I can put 3 shots in one connecting hole with hornady v max, almost one hole it. move out to 100 yards and that same group gets much larger.

on my 300 blackout at 50 yards same thing with hand loads, move out to 100 and I just checked my scope on it and it was loose so I know what went wrong there.

My question is why at 100 yards so much different on accuracy than at 50? I am sure wind had to come into play today some but I wouldnt think it would matter that much.

depends on what you mean when you say " much" larger.
Plus give us an estimate of what "windy as all get out" means in mph approx.
One persons much larger is anothers little bit bigger and one guys windy as all get out is anothers mild breeze.
Need more accurate dope..

Accuracy doesn't necessarily stays around the same MOA at different distances. It has to do bullet stabilization. Some heavier bullets don't stabilize before 200 yards. Some other can be very accurate at short distance and loose stability at longer range. I would suggest trying different loads (more powder, heavier bullet, changing OAL).

went from being able to basically one hole it to say a 2-3" group but we are talking 20mph crosswind. I have shot at those same distances and keep the group much tighter at 100 yards using the same ammo.

On what axis is the group opening up? Vertical, horizontal, or both?

little bit of both more so horizontal which is why I am thinking wind group was moving right same as wind but was no where near as tight

Were your shots wide left, right, up, down? Wind direction? Breathing, and trigger squeeze good?

Well with that bullet depending on the velocity your looking at around an inch of drift or a tad more just from the wind.
So take that out of the equation and recalculate.

shots wide right, wind blowing from left to right so that part I can figure out. now the groups were not as tight though. still nothing to be ashamed of and will kill any animal with the groups I was putting out but I dont like the fact the groups opened up so much. I guess wind gust could explain it.

The target is half the size at 100 yards, your eyesight is probably the biggest variable if you have nice groups at 50.

wind of that kind also plays a little havoc on you at the bench, so honestly with those factors figured in I don't think that you are really that out of bounds.
Best way to check is to try again on a calm day.
Then if your still shotting like that ,, well just hang your head in shame and slink off somehwere..

20 mph crosswinds ? Not very good condition to try and see what your rifle is capable of. Id try again on a calm day and if you still have the same problems then try to narrow it down. JMO. up

I may go hit bass pro indoor range but does anyone have any clue the distance in there? not ideal conditions today and I cant complain about the overall groups. The scope see's pretty well for me at 100 when I dont have to go down range to check the target since I can see from the bench.
