I sold a Model 70 in .25-06 a while back because I got tired of diddling with the BOSS on it, but that particular rifle had the slickest bolt function I ever handled. I replaced it with a newer Model 70 Classic and I have no complaints...it just isn't as smooth as the older one was.
The old .30-40 Krag-Jorgensens are reputed to be the smoothest bolt-actions out there, but I never thought they were that special. But then again, I must admit I have handled only two of them.

I have: 700 70 03 custom sporterized 116 77 Vanguard I have handled most every non custom major bolt gun. I hate to say it but the howa 1500 is right up there with the best of them.

I hate to say it but my ruger old model tang safety 30-06 is the smoothest and tightest bolt action I have ever handled. I have two pre 64 model 70's and have shot more than a few tikka's and sakos and frankly about any thing that I can think of except the blasers and it is still my favorite.
America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

I find it interesting to see Mauser and Mauser type actions mentioned. They are solid as a rock and are probably sitting in the most expensive custom wood ever created. However, every one of them I have ever owned or handled just wouldn't hold a candle to newer designs like the others mentioned. A Remington 700 is smoother than any Mauser I have ever owned.
Nostalgia??

Nostalgia?? I think it really depends on the maker and the quality of the materials used in production. Another action that was mentioned that will suprise a lot of people is the Lee Enfield they are very smooth and built like a tank, too.

I have never handled any of the ones you mentioned but of the ones that I have played with I would say the Colt Sauer is the smoothest. The colts I have held felt like wet ice on wet ice. Hands down the slickest bolts I have ever tried. MO

What do you all say is the smoothest boltaction rifle ever made? Ever made? I would bet none of us have ever handled it. Out of the ones I have had, a Stiller Viper was slightly smoother than a Tikka T3.

Of all the rifles I own, it would have to be an 1899 Krag Carbine that has the "smoothest" action.

1891 Argentine Mauser....hands down.
Its a completely different design than 98's. In fact, if you take a Argy 1891 bolt and lay it next to a Remington 700, they are very much alike. I sometimes think Remington got a few ideas from the 1891.

I worked a 770 that felt like plunging a toilet on an RV driving 70 mph on a rock road...that's about as smooth as a gulp of Steel Reserve 211
