I know old question, but it's the off season. Out of 8 or so hunting dogs in my past all I have ever owned and trained are females so I never thought much about it before.

Currently have a 7 year old spayed Vizsla Female. If you were bringing in a second Vizsla that will be together in the home and field, would you prefer another female or would it really matter if the pup was a male? I'm thinking it would not matter, but what would be your pros or cons?

I knew of one quail hunting group which would never allow any male dog on their lease, or anyone with a male in their company. I've never heard of an opposite group, but this is good way to get an argument started. I think this thread was a set up.

My brother has both a male and a female V and they get along great. Except when she is in season. But looks like you wont have to worry about that. They both stay in the same kennel together at night and a run during the day. They are best buds and we've never had to pull them apart or separate them.

I suppose it depends on the dog. Nowadays, I lean toward females but I'm thankful to get to hunt with either.

Rascal's a female... I love to hunt over her.

Rusty's a male.... I love to hunt over him.

I personally doesn't think it will matter since your bringing the dog as a pup.

I think it depends more on the dog than the sex.
But I do have three females and only one male in the house.

My male will try and stand toe to toe with any male that buffs up at him. He treats females differently. He will walk away or run if they are really snarly.

I have a male lab, female lab (roughly the same age, had both since pups), and a male GSP. The female is more territorial and aggressive towards the males. She is good natured towards my kids and people but she is definently the alpha dog. Even though she is the smallest. I think I will stick with male dogs in the future.

I think it depends on the dog. I don't think you can generalize how a dog will react based on their sex. Part of it will depend on the older dog's temperament.

I have two males and four female Vizslas. One of the males is neutered. In the field, they all ignore each other and hunt, back each other well, and argue a little over the retrieves, but it's more personality vs male/female deal. In the kennels at home, the males tend to be a little more dominant when it comes to food/toys - but no big deal. The males are equally affectionate and maybe have a little more personality. I think it's a toss up.

I just got a female GSP pup a few weeks back to go along with my 3 yr old male GSP. At 12 weeks old, I can already see she's gonna be the alpha.

Good thing my male is as easy going as they come. He teases her a bit then chases butterflys, squirrels, geckos and mosquito hawks the rest of the day.

Long story short, it depends on the dogs.

I've never met a good hunting dog I didn't like, Male or Female. If your having good luck with females & aren't planning to breed, stick with Females.

Thanks for the input guys. I kinda knew the answers, but it helped me think it out. Not even close to a done deal, but if all goes well I will be picking up a male Vizsla in April out of a half sister to Blaze. Though still versatile, I will probably be wanting to stay more on the upland side with this one, hunt tests and all. Blaze can fill the more extreme versatile hunting stuff for me same as always.
