I bought a Taurus PT809 at Academy in December 2011. I took it out to shoot it a week or so later and loved it, for the first 20 rounds or so. After that, the pistol quit firing. It feels like the trigger is not resetting. Took the pistol home, cleaned the snot out of it (it was cleaned before first shooting), and got some packing grease out that was hidden.
Shot 20 or 25 more rounds, same issue.
I then took the gun to Academy and they shipped it off to Taurus for repair (lifetime warranty). 2 weeks later, I get the gun back, with a letter that says that Taurus found no problem. So I took it out to shoot again, and SAME ISSUE!
When the gun stops firing, you can remove the mag, eject the cartridge, put the mag back in, and chamber a new round and the gun will fire once. The shell is ejected and a new round is chambered as expected, but the trigger will not do anything. When you pull on it, there is no tension in it. Just loose.
So now, I do not know what to do. I can't see anything wrong with the gun, and it shoots great up until 20 or 25 rounds. Academy says that they will ship it off again, but I think that is about it. At this point, I have a bad taste for the gun and don't really want to trust it in any way. I can't sell or trade the gun because I know it has a problem and wouldn't do that to someone.
With that said... What do you guys think? Is there a way I can fix this myself? Should I send it back to Taurus? Should I try to press Academy into giving me a refund?
I can't be happy with being able to shoot 20 rounds out of a gun I paid a good chunk of change for... Just don't know what to do about it.
Thanks in advance. Rant over.

I'd try to take it back to Academy and see if they would try to make you a satisfied customer. Tell them you want store credit for another firearm and see what they say, worst they could say is no... They have the history of them sending it back for you.
They have used guns in the stores, and from what I gathered from reps, they are guns just like you described (that they send back), so, be nice and firm and see how far that gets you.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I found someone else with the same issue and it was corrected by disassembling the firing pin housing and cleaning residual grease out. I did that, and was able to fire 50 rounds without an issue. I am not calling it fixed, but it is better.
If I can get a couple of hundred more rounds through it without an issue I will be happy. I don't want to get rid of the gun, I really like the way it fits me and shoots, so I hope this resolves it.

^^^^Here is your problem. My brother had the exact same problem with his PT145. Trigger would go limp. We had to send it back 2 times before it would work right. So, send it back with a very detailed note, and emphisize it's the second time being sent off for this problem. The factory will put maybe 3-5 rounds down it, and call it fixed. I've also bought a Taurus 357 mag, and had issues. I will never buy another one. If you need a gun, you NEED a gun. There is no way I'd bet my life or someone else's relying on a Taurus. It just won't happen. Get a GLOCK!

I bought a Taurus Millennium Pro the week I turned 21 because the "price was right." That's the last time I will ever buy a Taurus.
As for the Academy thing, I work there so I know a bit about it, they cannot give someone a return on a firearm unless it is approved by firearm compliance from the corporate office. Our policy is NO returns or exchanges. They tell you that when you buy the gun and they also have it written in the pamphlet you get when you buy a gun. Our managers will always try to make a customer happy but almost everyone who talks to a manager about returning a malfunctioning firearm will get denied. You would have to be a real arse to the manager for them to even consider asking firearm compliance for approval.

Friends dont let friends buy taurus. That being said, ditch as soon as possible and get something else. Trade + a little cash and get you a lc9 or kel-tec p9 or something similar.

I bought it because it was on sale. It was compulsive. If I can get the gun to where I believe it functions fine, I will probably get rid of it. I just can't ethically trade or sell it to someone knowing that it has an issue. "Had an issue" is a different story. I won't buy another one, I have read too many complaints since having issues of my own. Maybe next time I will post "I am thinking about buying this..." and get the DONT DO IT'S before I make the purchase. lol. Thanks for the responses.

We have all been there. I'm starting to learn that in almost everything you get what you pay for.

Take video of it malfunctioning with detailed images of the limp trigger and then then send that with the pistol back to Taurus.
When you get it back, sell it and buy something dependable.

I have a 45 with no problems, however, I've seen several folks who purchased their 410 revolver with it jammed...my only observation on the 45 is that it's not as accurate a one of my old 45's but the work on the trigger ect is good...I'm not much on belly guns...don't get paid to carry one any more..Dirt

I had some reservations about picking up a Taurus, but went and got a 24/7 anyways. I won't lie I love it. Its had 500-600 .40 rounds put through it and not a single issue.
I've never been a fan of Glocks, I kow that sounds crazy, but I don't care for the way they feel in my hand. I am looking at making the Taurus my night stand gun and picking up a Springfield or Sig .40 for my carry side arm.

The only handgun I had before the Taurus was an old 38 special revolver. Never looked at pistols much, and just happened to see this one on sale. I really like the gun and the way it shoots, when it works.
Since having a semi pistol I have figured out how much I enjoy shooting it. I really want a 1911 style. I think what I will do is keep the Taurus just to shoot at the range and find something a little more reliable for a "protection" gun. Any 1911's to stay away from?

I have had two taurus hand guns. 1. Tracker 17hmr cylinder would lock up hammer locked up, case split in the cylinder 2. 24/7 9mm OSS would never shoot right no matter what I did failed to eject every round. Didnt load most rounds.
I have washed my hands with them now I shoot a Glock and never had a problem with it. I think of it as my little AK47 40cal pistol
