I have been reading a bunch on which sight to install on my new turkey gun. I am torn between the EOTech 512 in Realtree APG or the Nikon TurkeyPro Shotgun Scope. I realize the major difference between the holographic sight and the traditional scope (as well as the price!) but wanted any feedback from hunters who have used either one.

Personally, I prefer my open site to a scope. Especially if the birds are henned up and you have the potential for collateral damage. Just aim for the wattles and its a dead bird.

EOTechs are nice, but pricy. My choice would be a Burris FastFire II or a Mueller.

Burris Fastfire fan here as well. Have the II on my SBE, but waiting on the release of the III for my 20ga I'm building.

Talking myself out of the EOTech. Just saw one at BPro and it is too big for what I am looking for. I am going to look into the fast fire and the truglo turkey red dot. I just cannot justify a more expensive sight on my turkey gun than my deer rifle. I appreciate all the help guys.

I just use the bead on the 870 and have the trueglow sights that mount on the vent rib on the Benelli, works good enough for me.

x3 i have never really seen the purpose or need for a scope on a shotgun for turkey hunting. Open sights work excellent.

Get some targets and do some shooting with open sights, practice like you would with your deer rifle. Learn where the shot charge is hitting in relation to your sights. Put the money spent on an optical aid into practice ammo. Unless I have missed something, you can practicing your calling techniques without breaking any game laws. Go into the woods without a gun, practice calling that big tom in an extra 5-10 yards closer. One of the old master hunters once said to a person interested in shooting at longer ranges, "You need practice your stalking, not your shooting"

I don't see any need for more than the BB. You aren't going to shoot all that far.

With the tight chokes we are shooting today, optical or iron sights can make a big difference, especially 20 yds and under.

Exactly why I asked the question. With today's chokes and special turkey loads, there is a greater chance to miss at 10yds than there is at 30. I think I'm going to hold out for the fastfire III. It seems to have fixed some of the issues with the second version. They should be in stores soon, one place online already has them.

There is no doubt about that. A buddy of mine, who happened to be a US Army sniper, missed a Tom that was so close the wad went past where the bird was standing. It was within 10 yards. If a scope or better sight will help you put lead on target, go for it. I personally use 3" shells, open sights and try to call a bird close enough to kill it at 20 yards or less.

When I used a scope, I used a Simmons 3X diamond scope because I used my 835 for both deer and turkey. I could put the head at the top and the wattles at the bottom of the diamond and it was dead bird.

Since I have the high viz bead on my 835 now, and since I hunt ducks and turkey vs. deer and turkey, I hunt open sights instead.

I slowley am dropping my shotgun for bow hunting turkey. To me regardless scoped or not going to have to hit some paper few times at different yardage with your fav load and choke to see how its going to pattern. Also what ever sight you pick make sure you torque down well. Had a friend slap one on and after few shots from the 12 guage at the range, he didnt find out till to late and one missed bird the sight came lose on him

Midway says it is coming in on February 20th and opticsplanet.com seems to have it right now for $239. I did not attempt to take the item all the way to purchase so maybe it is a pre-order.

I'm going to use a .36 cal flintlock this year, so it will be with iron sights.

Gotcha. Yeah, I've been watching Midway. They keep pushing their date back. Opticsplanet, is just a pre-order. I'm told buy a Burris rep it's going to be released in March. He won't give me an exact date though. I'm talking 3 MOA, I think the 8 MOA is released this week.

sheesh, if your shooting a turkey at 20 yards put in a wider choke. Im NOT going to be using a extra full choke at 20 yards. I like to call em in close so there is no need for one of those really tight chokes for me. Ive shot plenty of turkey at 20 yards or less with open sights and have yet to miss at that range. But...i practice shooting too and know exactly where my shotgun shoots....and use the right choke for the hunt.

I prefer to use the tightest patterning gun/choke combination I own for turkey. In close you do have to be spot on with aiming but that can still be done with a bead sight or the fancier ones, I use a set of fiber optic sights on the Beneli most of the time.

oh yeah, dont get me wrong..tight chokes are good. I use a full but have not found any need for the extra full turkey chokes at short range...longer range..heck yeah...but if your missing shots at 20 yards or less then it might be beneficial to try a wider choke....or just practice. I just prefer a bead sight. To each his own.

Very true, the real reason the sights are on the Beneli is the bead is not in the center of the pattern. Using the rear sight and the front bead gets me there.

IMHO It's a waste of money to use red dot/scope type sighting devices on a turkey gun. Use the right choke/shell combo, pattern your gun(practice) and if you have adjustable fiber optic front and mid barrel sights on your gun that's all you need. Save your money to buy better optics for your rifles.

I used this set up last season. Always shot open sites before. Funny that both birds I shot last season were at odd angles and off shoulder. Put the red dot on the waddles and both were clean kills. Im sold on sites for Turkey Guns.
