That is an interesting tactic and seems to be very productive! Thanks for posting it!

Yea, but I like the idea of the decoy being able to handily defend it's self if the jokers try to get out of line.

First by accident during a Turkey hunt which she also acompanies me on. Then a listmember sent me a dvd with decoy dog footage and I figured out with my short range calling I could do this. We started doing some training hunts last year and will work more on it this spring. I about gave up on my confidence with it working, then it started clicking with my last two hunts. I am not using Blaze like in the western hunts long range, but more of what they call a passive decoy dog. Near me and always in voice command. She just hangs out while I call. Her presence distracts the coyote enough that I am not noticed. Blaze only engages dances with wolves style when it gets close. Whistle her in, which has caused the coyotes to follow her, then I let her clear the blast range and shoot. ![](http://www.fototime.com/23E2788683B37B1/standard.jpg)

I now remember you doing a short write up about that John. I should have known anyway, she is an amazing hunting companion and I must say I am quiet jealous. Glad to hear she is recovering well from her illness.

I bet about any dog that will stay near you and under your control can be used as a passive decoy dog. I think with the one in that picture I could have done jumping jacks while it came in and it still would have stayed focused on the dog. Just as long as they don't circle down wind first.
