Went on my first hunt here in Texas today and on sunday. My dad and I were up at our property NE of Paris doing some work this weekend so I decided to go hunting.

One of our family friends that lives close to us has been saying that he has had ducks on is big pond all season.

On Sunday I went up and set up in a blind that our friends nephew had made. Just after first light I look to my left and see some ducks already on the water. I didn't even here them come in.

At that point about 50 ducks come in and land down by the dam. A few minutes later some ducks fly over and give me a shot. I miss all three shots, then my gun jams . All of the ducks fly off while I am trying to get it fixed.I get the gun unjammed and get ready again.

While fixing my gun two Canada geese land near the dam. After waiting awhile and deciding that they weren't going to come my way I get up and make a big loop and get below the dam. I looked over the top of the dam and saw where they were and walked some more to get closer. I check on them one more time. I then got up on top of the dam and the geese take off. I got one on the first shot but the other one got away.

First Canada goose

On Monday morning I set up on the dam and had a bunch of ducks come in but didn't get any shots. I tried to sneak up on some at the other end of the pond but didn't have any luck.

It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

You are right about that. I bet I got 4 lbs of meat from just the breasts.

I am from Allen, but my family has property in Red River county. My dad has been hunting the property since the mid 80's and a few years ago we got a chance to buy it.

That is an outstanding gander. Did you get him with duck loads? Now you know to be prepared for next time and have some BB's for these occasions. Never know when they might come in handy. Seeing any flocks of geese around there or just that lonely pair?

The plan for my property is to build a pond and put a field below it that I can flood in the winter. Maybe 1 to 2 acres.

Luckily I had some BB's with me. I have gone Snow goose hunting in Arkansas before and had some laying around so I brought them along. I only saw those two on Sunday but my Grandfaher said he saw a large flock about a 1/4 mile away on Saturday.
