Until this week, I have only found 1 tick on my dogs. This past weekend I found 2 ticks on Deuce. I checked both dogs end to end and didn't find any more. Last night, I found one on Izzy. These are those huge female grape sized ticks.

I am wondering if I have a tick problem at the house or if the dogs picked them up hunting or Deuce got them at the vet. I found Deuce's ticks about 3-5 days after hunting a new area and about the same time after going to the vet for stitches. I found Izzy's 1 1/2 weeks after hunting a new area and 2 days after Deuce went to the vet.

How long does it take from them to go from a spec to a grape? I didn't find any on Izzy on Monday, but she has a grape on her shoulder on Wednesday.

They are on Frontline for ticks. They are due for it this week. I guess it could have washed off from all the duck hunting we have done since their last application.

If you been hunting where there are deer it seems there are always ticks . I even found some on me but I wouldn't think ticks would be bad during the winter months

We in the past had used frontline, which worked well on fleas. We switched over to k-9 advantix as we had heard it worked really well. We use it year round, since switching we have not had problems with fleas or ticks.

hope this helps.

I bet this is going to be a banner year for ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, grubs... basically, name your insect or parasite. We haven't really had any kind of a winter yet and if we don't... it's gonna be ugly, especially if we start getting some rain in spring and into the summer.

I have used Preventic tick collar in the past. It worked great and I could take Cash to an area that I would normally find ticks on him and would find none. Its does have its draw backs. They can have it on in rain but not swimming. I could take it off if he was going to be in the water and put it back on after he dried and still found no ticks. This collar is poisonous if chewed on by another dog. So if you have two dogs that rough house together it could be a big problem. I have been considering putting it on the dogs when I kennel them at night and taking them off in the morning. I just don't know if that would provide them enough protection from ticks. With 4 dogs that play hard with each other all day I might have to look in a different direction this year.

ditto on the collar, for some reason i have one patch that i hunt that is infested. My dog is on frontline and i'll still find 10-20 ticks on here 1 to 2 weeks after we hunt. If you put the collar on her 3 days before you go, you will not have any more.

How long does it take them to go from a spec to a grape size? I was amazed to see this last one after I checked Izzy two days earlier.

I have noticed that about 3 days after I take my dog out is when I start to find the blueberry size ticks. I usually find them around the head and sholder area. It probably depends on when and where they embed. Interested to see what people are using because I definitely need to start with something.

Yep, I don't think it takes more than a few days for them to get pretty big.

The best answer I could find was 3-11 days on adult ticks.
I know that doesn't help you narrow it down much.
When I did find ticks on my dogs it was within the first few days after an outing. Ticks can live over a year with nothing to eat so be sure to check your clothes, the dogs, their vests and kennels that you take on outings.

Usually 3-5 days from what I've noticed.

My vet recommended Parastar Plus for hunting dogs because it treats fleas/ticks. I have not applied it yet but will start now.

I just go pick up some cheap bottle of this stuff from Roach feed & seed in downtown Garland for about $7 and it cures EVERYTHING. Ticks, fleas, flys, ear mites you name it it gets rid of them.

also the flea/tick spray (blue bottle by Adams i think) helps a lot. after taking my lab dove hunting when fleas and ticks are real bad i just spray her legs and feet down, you can see them falling off her. on top of that she wears a collar. don't want to spray that around her eyes. usually put some on my hand and rub beind her ears and the warm spots ticks like.

There are certainly years when they are worse than others and some areas where you'll find them every year. My experience is if you put the dog on the tailgate after you pick them up and watch them for a minute you can usually pick off most as they will be walking around on them. This is on pointers, longer haired dog not so easy.

Ticks have been real bad lately even with the cold. They sell a spray you can spray on their legs before you take them in the woods. Ticks travel and multiply fast so if they are pickin em up out huntin youre likely to get them at the house if youre not using advantix
