Same as if they were closer, good optics help a lot at that range. If they are questionable at 100 yrds then optics are going to answer the question at 500 either. If they are that questionable - only one way to find out for sure! Or just leave them be. I don't hunt in an AR county, but outside the ears is a fair field judgement in terms of width. If someone can't tell that at 100 yards nevermind 500 - get them glasses and me some hunters orange!

Yes... Knew he was roughly 17-18" wide and 5 years old. Both being legal in my book. shot with a 270wsm and a Leupy on 14x And where did the disappointment factor in for the season ending on a buck? I am also guessing he was not what you thought he was since you spent the rest of the season question how big the 8 point was, correct?

I've spent 3 seasons wondering how big the 8 was and my answer is smaller than the previous 2 bc of decline. As much as I'd like to shoot him, there's others I've watched grow too. Will be hard for me to pass up a 5yo 6/7/? next season as well.

Yes, I understand that but will you think twice about it if one of those older bucks steps out opening morning again and having to spend the rest of the season not being able to hunt anymore other than with a camera?

I am sure i will hear a lot of flack for this... BUT
IMO ONLY I am having built for myself.. FOR ME and MY OPINION and MY USE the best deer rifle..
I am building a 6.5-300 ultra mag. Im calling it the 6.5 ragin cajun ( I'm not the first one to neck the ultra down to 6.5 but, it doesn't have a name.. so this is what I'm calling mine.)
Hopefully (although pretty sure this is right)
the 129 hornady sst and 130 accubond at 3800fps. thats only 6" of drop at 400 yards with a a kill zone zero. dial up two moa and roughly good to 500 yards.. I don't know about you.. but I can count on one finger the times I have NEEDED to shoot farther than 500 yards.. I have.. but was it needed.. no.. not here in 90% of texas deer hunting. but whats great is the under 400 yard mark.. just point and shoot. with plenty of energy to boot and not overkill.... barrel life will be short.. but plenty to last a deer hunting career.... I looked into the 257 weatherby but freebore, brass $, and lack of bullets in 257 turned me away... so this hopefully will be MY best deer hunting rifle.. for general use.

I haven't seen a 7 mag in a hunting camp in a long time. Probably because there isn't a need for magnum calibers in Texas. No moose, elk, bears. I'm putting my 7RM in the safe and continue with either a .243 or .260. i wouldnt do that... 2 years ago i took a 243 to a pipeline where 95% of the deer traffic is within 150yds of me... i look back behind me and there is a shooter 8pt id been wanting about 500yds away... so id keep a heavy caliber just in case I will most likely use the .243 for varmints and hogs although it should take down a deer at 500 yards. Most likely if there is a long shot possibility I will have a .260 or 6.5x55. I want an honest opinion who all shoots hogs with a Fing .243?? I have seen this statement several times in the last couple of weeks.

It sounds like you don't think it is a suitable caliber. 100gr (if you have suitable twist) at 3000fps+ or 55gr at 4000fps+, I don't see a problem taking a hog down with that kind of energy level.

DRT. If i'm gonna shoot a pig, its gonna be a headshot. period.

30-30 for short distances (light gun, shorter barrel, will drop almost anything up to 150-200 yards)
I'd say 300 win mag would do the job for almost anything at longer distances. Or even the 7mm mag but with the 300 you are getting a .30 caliber bullett

.270 Win is all that is necessary for Tx. WT's. My average shot is around 200 yards with a long of 408. 140g. BTSP crumpled his arse on the spot with complete pass thru and a massive exit wound. I have no hesitation in stretching out to 500 yards if it were necessary.
Sure the mags will be a little faster/flatter but if you know the distance and know your ballistics then the .270 is all that is needed.
And yes, I own a safe full of mags from .264WM to .308 Norma Mag.

I'm amazed that people managed to even kill a deer before .300 ultra mags and Barnes bullets were invented

Welcome to the new information highway where if you don't post certified pictures accompanied by 3 independent witnesses testimony it just can't happen or doesn't exist.
