I would say the big difference would be in action style preference. I have both and prefer Ruger's Mauser style action. Remington has a better factory trigger but to get a good trigger either one it has to go the gunsmith or aftermarket. Despite what some are about to say, both can be good shooters from the factory. Either can be excellent shooters with a little work and attention to detail. Both hold their value if you dont beat them up. There is a bit more aftermarket support for Remington but stocks, barrels, and triggers are readily available for the Ruger as well. Did I miss anything?

700... had a ruger 25-06 for years and never really did like the action or looks of it

All of my Rugers are the old tang safety but I like the plain stock without the gloss finish of the BDL. I have owned the Remingtons and have nothing against them, just like the Rugers better.

I have few of each. I like the Ruger (Tang Safety) for look, feel and durability. I like the Rems for their out of the box accuracy. Put a good trigger in the Ruger and it's close to the Rems in accuracy. Should I have to pick between the two it would be the Remington 700 or 788, but theres just something about them old tang safety Rugers. They just feel good in your hands!

I have a .270 Ruger and Remington 700. The Remington is a tack driver and far outgroups my Ruger. Not sure why but year after year when I sight them both the Remington is more accurate.

If their both factory that's easy The Rems just have a better trigger and I'll never understand why Ruger refuses to address their crap triggers. They can build a rifle you can drive T-posts with all day and still make the evening hunt, but they can't build a decent trigger.

Ruger puts heavy triggers ont heir guns because the owner doesnt like to be sued for owner incompetance. I would go Ruger 77.

For a straight accuracy, you can't beat the 700 action.

But I buy rifles to hunt with, not punch paper, and my ruger is like an extension of my arm.

I only own one rifle that I would never sell, that one is my ruger

I'd have to ask which Remington 700. Their top of the line stuff surpasses the lower and mid range models. At least Ruger is brown wrapper across the board.

For a brand new in the box rifle I don't think either company deserves your business right now.

I own both and every time I head to the blind I put my Ruger 270 over my shoulder. I dont know why. I am confident with both, both have Leupold optics, I just always hunt the Ruger.

And what, pray tell, is the company deserving of business

Don't think that I have ever read of any account where our military snipers shot Rugers. Not saying that it never happened. Just never heard about it. I like both the M77 and the 700.

If ya hadn't been shooting off the hood of your truck in a 40 mph wind it would have done better.

I actually jumped in the back and laid down in the bed, tossed rifle on my backpack,...not going to lie it was very hot and windy though. Actually was only shooting three shots...the last two I was cussing until I walk up to target and then started laughing

Amen.

I have both Ruger M77 and Rem 700 . . would trade both for another Tikka. Try the Tikka action and you'll never buy another Ruger or Remington.

why does everybody keep referring to the fact that since our military uses a model 700 action, they must be the greatest things on earth.

Carlos hathcock shot a model 70.

the military have never used a blazer, sako, weatherby or browning action.

these are all nice rifles, arguably better than the 700. i know even the nicest model 700 can't even be placed in the same gun rack as a mark V or nice sako.

the military uses a .308, its touted as the "ultimate" long range caliber when in reality it is a mediocre performer at best, even the antiquated 30-06 blows it out of the water ballistically.

The military is about cost, contract, made in America....

The Remingtons they use are not the garden varity that you go pickup at the store. Like many of the Remington lovers rifles they are modified and accurized. The 700 is a good action and there are plenty of them out there to work on.

As far as rifles from Remington goes the 788 I think was a more accurate out of the box rifle than the 700. Yes you get thr occasional out of the box 700 that shoots unbelivable groups but when you make that many some have got to be good.

Tossing Mark V in the mix would be like remington tossing in their AWR... I'll take the AWR.

that means buying nothing but customs b/c there's not a mass production company that does that.
