This is a question asked over and over again, and there is only one response.

Go to some pro-shops and try out different bows.

Top brands today, in no specific order:

Mathews
Mission
Bowtech
Diamond
Martin
PSE

I've got an older bow and have been looking to upgrade for some time. For the most part, all of these companies are producing quality bows, so you have to find one you like.

The best thing you could do is set a budget, and remember, you've got lots to buy besides the bow. Arrows, field points, quiver, release, target, etc.

Once you've found the bow you like, find someone to shoot with. Sounds like you're new and you want to get off to a good start with your form in shooting the bow.

Goodluck.

$400 to $500 and you arent going to get anything new. Check out ebay and craigslist plus the classifieds here for a good used bow. Add Hoyt to that list. Read up and decide if you want single cam or binary although choices will be limited in your budget.
Might be best to save up til you have a bigger budget. A good bow is going to start at least around $500 for a bare bow, add around $100 or more for sight, around $50-$200 for rest, another $50 for release. $100 for arrows.

Features to look for in a bow are built in string stopper and pulley guard, they are not necessities but worth while investments.

I recommend a Mathews LX already set up. All you would need is a release and arrows. I could fit it easily in your budget. whistle

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Bowtech Assasin. $599 fully ready to go, buy a release and some arrows and your in business. I could have bought any bow on the market this past year, but after trying just about all of them. I could not justify spending that kind of money, when I thought most of them didn't even shoot as good as an assassin.

If you are within 100 miles of Corsicana, you owe to yourself to go see Jerry at Rednek Booda Outdoors. Not many better than him and he will not sell you something you don't need.

i would look into the assassin.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Go to archerytalk forum and look at used bows. Lots of good deals there. I shoot the 2010 Hoyt turbohawk and you can find them new for around 350 or used and fully outfitted for a little more. Sweet fast and quiet.

Also I know everyone has different opinions but I love the Easton epic arrows. For fixed blade I use G5 montecs. For expandables rage 2-blade. Start practicing at 10-15 then 20. Once you have 20 down you can expand as much as you like. I usually just shoot 20 and 30 because I don't want to risk a longer shot than that anyway. As far as hunting goes the four things you must master are scent, sight, and sound, and shot. If you fail in any of these areas the deer will win.

In my opinion, you need to save up longer until you have about $1000 to spend. There's no way you'll be able to stay inside your budget and get something that is decent. By the time you buy a bow that's packaged, you'll still need to buy a release which will cost $100-150, arrows which are usually about $120-150 a dozen, you'll need something to shoot at which you can skimp on and pay 35-50 for a target at Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Bottom line is, you don't want to go cheap on your equipment because it's the most important thing you carry into the field. Save until you can spend more and buy everything that has a moving part new from a pro shop and have them tune your entire set up to you. If you skimp and try to get by on the cheap path you won't be successful.

You don't need $1000 for a "Good Bow"!!

$599 for an Assassin, +30 for a release, +50 for a half Dozen Beeman ICS hunters, +35 for broadheads, if you are going the new way That is a little over $700.

Now when I got back into bowhunting, I bought a used Mathews Q2XL on EBay for $175, threw $360 into accesories and such and hunted with it for two years. Took two deer with it and never had any real complaints.

Wanted to get a new bow just for me last year, I could have bought anything out there. I couldn't justify spending the money on the more expensive bows because after trying alot many of them did not shoot as well as the Assassin.

I agree with Chuck. Lots of "very good" bows out there that are used and excellent. I have never had a mechanical problem with either of the Hoyts I have owned. Bought the first one used for $350 and the Turbohawk new for $500. They have been consistent everytime. Get a last year's model new or 1-2 year old used bow and you will be fine.

You don't go all in without seeing your cards, same with bows if your just thinking about it go in enough to play the game. Plenty of time to push it all in later.

First I confess - I can be real tight when starting something new. That being said, if you are a true rookie bowhunter, I recommend buying an older Mathews. I shot a Z-Max for 10 years, sold it to a new bowhunter for $150 ready to shoot and he loves it. Why drop a $1000 on a bow, another $500 on sight, case, quiver, arrows, tips, etc. and then decide the sport is not for you? Some will argue that an older setup will discourage a new hunter. I would disagree and believe it would lead you to appreciate all the new technology as your skills and passion for the sport increase. Buying a new, top of the line bow would be akin to a new fisherman dropping $50,000 on a new boat before he could bait a hook!

I have to agree with some of these guys i have shot almost every bow brand in the list above but i will be honest the new mathewes heli'm is sweet but i am going to buy the newist diamond bow its 550 set up so all you need is a release and arrows my group wit that bow was tighter than e mathews so you need to shot the bows to see what fits you best ......now to answer the question about how much you should shot well that depends on wheather or not your going to be a serious bow hunter my opinion shoot every time you get a chance you dont want to get in the woods and mame an animal because you didnt have enough practice...i only bow hunt so im at the range every night that i can for at least 2 or more hoursmy only problem for the 2012 season is finding a lease to get on since i just moved to dallas texas so if anyone has any ideas please give me a shout

Go to a pro shop and take a look at the Mission line. Several people purchased the Craze last year and walked out a little over $500 for a new bow set-up and ready to shoot.

Yes, you can get a good used bow for about that much, but I will tell you this. I had people coming into the shop last year for "great deals" they got only to find that they needed to spend an extra $$$ because the draw length was to long and they had to buy a new cam and have it installed, or they cables/string was bad and had to buy all these new.

Example:

One poor guy bought a Mathews z7 on-line for $50 less than it would have cost new. It needed a new cam and string/cable, and by the time he walked out of the store, he had almost $900 invested in a used bow.

Good luck......

I would agree with some, there are many package bows that are under $500. and with all of the tech. to date ... most bows are equal no matter how much you spend you are buying a name. I personally use pse.

Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different.

Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
