 Hog hunting questions?

Ok so here is my question long time hog hunter myself and always have a hunting liscense. i am trying to get a buddy of mine into hog hunting and want to take him hunting at my lease this coming weekend. The question i have is he never took his hunter certification course and he got his "freebie" liscense last year for a dove hunt we went on and he doesnt have time to get his certification before we go. I know it says that you must have a hunting liscence to hunt pigs but with the problems they cause and the nusiance they pose how strict would a game warden be if he came out there and found him hunting pigs without a liscense? Once again i am a rule following kinda guy but do to time restraints and the animals we are hunting i dont see to big of an issue. any help would be greatly appreciated

If he has permission from land owner he should be ok. Otherwise I would contact your specific warden and ask him or her.

yeah the land owner has no problem with it i would just feel really bad if i told him it was ok and took him out there then got him in trouble. The only bad thing is contacting he game warden pretty much garuntees a visit i would believe.

thats what i was suspecting he might just have to be a spectator till he can get his stuff done. oh well at least i get to lay em down

He still has to have a license and he still has to have hunters certification to hunt hogs. Only hogs hunted under a TXPW depeciation permit can be hunted without a hunting license.

You dont have to have a license to hunt the hogs on private land if there is no feeders or bait sights that would attract hogs...if you are hunting over feeders or any means of baiting the hog in then yes you will need a license

pg 25 Texas Parks and Wildlife a hunting license is not required to hunt the following depradating feral hogs,if a landowner (resident ir nonresident) or land owners agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowners land.

so basically as long as the land owner says it is ok and acknowledges there is a hog problem it's ok?

Treat him like one of the kids, ask him if he wants to go, then load up and take him, after settin' on his behind and not bein' able to get in on the fun, he'll be for gettin' whatever license are required so as not to be left behind.Some folks are like an old motorcycle, they need to be kickstarted.

You need a license and hunters ed to hunt pigs. Page 73 in the Outdoor Annual EXOTIC ANIMALS AND FOWL Exotic animal refers to grass-eating or plant-eating, single-hoofed or cloven-hoofed mammals that are not indigenous or native to Texas and are known as ungulates, including animals from the deer and antelope families that landowners have introduced into this state. Includes, but is not limited to feral hog, Aoudad sheep, Axis deer, Elk, Sika deer, Fallow deer, Blackbuck antelope, Nilgai antelope, and Russian boar. Exotic fowl refers to any avian species that is not indigenous to this state, including ratites (emu, ostrich, rhea, cassowary, etc.). There are no state bag or possession limits or closed seasons on exotic animals or fowl on private property. It is against the law to:
• Hunt an exotic without a valid hunting license.• Hunt an exotic on a public road or right-of-way. • Hunt an exotic without the landowner’s permission. • Possess an exotic or the carcass of an exotic without the owner’s consent. You'd need a depredation permit to shoot them without a license. ---> TPWD depredation permit

I took a hunters saftey ed online and got a certificate for the state of indiana and used that permit to hunt in IL and WI. I am not sure if it will transfer over here in TX but it probably took me 30 minutes or less to complete online.

is he going to be hunting right along side of you? if so i wouldnt see the difference in him being able to hunt as opposed to a kid under 17 to hunt. i may be wrong but thats the way i have always understood it.

You can kill coyotes and hogs without a hunting license if they are depredating livestock or land, with LO's permission or his agent. No permit required. The permit you are referring to, is for all game and non-game animals. If you look in the book, it is there in black and white, page 25 I think. Also, there is nothing in the book that refers to hunting over bait for feral hogs that would require a license, shoot and leave them lay, etc.... But to avoid any confusion, he should take hunters ed and buy a license. Hunters ed is what?? 15 bucks and a day out of the week, or split up between a Sat and Sun. Then a license is what?? Somewhere around 20 bucks or so.

I wouldn't advise anyone to try to argue with a warden over the technicalities between pages ? or ?. I was told by a warden that if your hunting anything in the state of Texas, you better have a license,"even if it is picking up a rattlesnake off the road".

I wouldn't advise anyone to try to argue with a warden Me either, but I bet you could ask 10 different GW's and get 10 different answers. I do wished TPWD would make it "very clear" in the book and not all of these "gray areas". Reading it can be somewhat confusing!!

As has been noted above, one does not need a license to kill hogs causing depredation if one is the landowner, landowner's agent, or lessee.
HOWEVER: It is my understanding that if you keep the meat you're hunting and you need a license.
As long as the landowner agrees to designate your buddy as his agent for the purpose of killing nuisance hogs, and someone else claims the meat, you might be okay. Then again I am not a lawyer. The best bet is obviously to get a license.

This post reminds me of the late 70's when it was decided that crows were migratory birds and fell under Federal Rules and since there was no declared season it became illegal to hunt them. Wardens didn't know what to do. Some wanted to fine you and others wanted to get their shotguns and join you.

I thought the hunter's ed class was very informative and a good way to spend a Saturday. (versus yardwork)
It was much better than I thought it would be, especially if you are not already an expert in all things hunting.
I am as busy as everybody else, but I don't understand why people make such a big deal about taking the course. It isn't expensive, and you might learn something.
My brother keeps putting it off as well. He bought the 1 year deferral this year. I would tell your buddy the same thing I told my brother....If you want to hunt with me, shell out the $50 bucks, make time, and take the class.
