Perhaps someone can explain to me why despite my best efforts, I can never get clover to grow in my food plots. And yet, it covers my yard around this time every year with absolutely no effort of my own.

I can't answer your question, but if you look at my back yard right now, you would think I was an expert at growing the stuff.

Water content, nutrients, soil type, daylight, temp differences? I know I can't grow anything at my lease b/c of the sandy soil and lack of yearly water... But the gumbo clay soil in my yard will grow anything. Especially clover and weeds. Have your food plot soil analyzed and feed/fertilize accordingly is my guess. How you would do that is another question... County Ag office? Place that sells fertilizer?

You are planting introduced clovers and the one you see growing is a native Burr Clover. It has home field advantage since it is native and has been groomed thru the years to survive those soils. You can buy native clover seeds thru Pogue AgriPartners, Douglas King and Turner Seed Co. but prepared to pay more. But once they are established they will reseed themselves.

Dig up some of your native clover and go plant it for the deer. They love prancing through crimson.

Get a soil a sample test done. You may have too much nitrogen. Get with your county extention agent for where to send it. I sent mine to A&M.
It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.

Go to this website and follow the directions. Get your soil tested and it will come back with what you need to do to grow whatever you are trying to do. http://soiltesting.tamu.edu/

Texas A&M has a clover that does really well in sand soil. If you want to improve your soil add some humic acid, if you do use a good quality humate, one that is at least 70 %. The one I use is above 90 % and and you only need between 8-12oz per acre. Once your clover comes up and has 3-4 petals apply a good folar spray. The one I use is humate based and application rate is 1/2 gallon/acre.

Our place is covered up in clover right now. Small 3 leaved type.It is EVERYWHERE.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

It is probably the burr clover. It's the stuff that gets all knotted up in your dog's coat.
