So I had a friend tell me my .308 Win wouldn't drop a hog as fast as his .243! Anywho, which of the 2 calibers is a better overall deer, coyote, hog and other big game rifle?

Both will get it done. Some variables will be range, loads, and how well you shoot them.

Either one will work with correct shot placement. But what makes him think that he has more knock down power and so on?

I have both calibers and they have killed deer, hogs and yotes. The .308 is my hammer and drops hogs hard. I handed down my .243 to my son and it is deadly accurate to 150 with very little drop. My daughter shot her doe this year with it and it dropped right where it was standing. I am not sure of the penetrating power of the .243 versus a BIG hog's shoulder blade though...

No doubt about the AR crap, just damn shame hunters don't have self control and knowledge

Isn't a .243 just a necked down .308? If I recall, that's the case...and if that is the case, I guess a .243 would have more velocity, given a similar powder charge, but the .308 would have more destructive impact, given bullet weight. I shot both at the NRA whittington center on the 1000 yard range...against paper, the results were negligible...against a pig, I'd take the .308
Jake, I'd love to come down and hunt with you sometime, you seem like a good kid. I lived in Ft. Worth for about 7 years, and my folks have a place on the Brazos outside of Weatherford, my sister and her husband both work @ Lockheed in FTW...
Obviously, it's a big commitment for me to drive 12 hours to hunt...how prolific (and consistent) are your hogs?

I use a .308 with either 145 gr FMJ or 150 gr Nosler tip. I've only had to blood trail one deer and that was a doe that dressed at 64 lbs. She ran 20' and dropped. The Nosler blew her heart out of the other side of her body and I have no idea how she even ran one step. Other than that, every deer whether buck or doe and every hog has dropped in their tracks. I don't like to have to track them down because I get sick to my stomach if I don't kill an animal with the first shot whether it's a deer or hog. I hate to see them suffer.
That .308 removes 99% of their suffering.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, will you have time to do it over?

I have both calibers. I Shoot a R25 in .308 and love it. But My Rem 700 in .243 is a tack driving gun

anything .30 caliber is the shiznit! I pack a remington model 710 30-06 shooting 180gr. winchester supreme accubond CT.
A year ago, I neck-shot a 175lb hog with it at about 50 yards or so. I D.R.T.ed him. When they were skinning him and got his hide down to where his neck was and his head basically fell off.
I pretty much obliterated his spine with that round and caused enough tissue damage to basically decapitate him.
thats my testimoial. so YEAH .308
