I can't tell you the number of times I've stumbled across a flock out in the middle of a field in a "rain puddle", nowhere near a tank or lake. Always a pleasant surprise.

I love me some widgeon!! We limited out last weekend on one group of widgeon while out goose hunting winter wheat. We managed to call the same group of birds into the spread 3 consecutive times until we reached our limit. Hoping to do it again in the am so I can get one to the taxi.

There's a wheat field down from where we hunt that's holding THOUSANDS on widgeon! Unfortunately, the owner of the field won't let anyone hunt it due to a prior bad experience. Pretty amazing sight none the less.

I have noticed this year with the stock tank and lake levels extremely low causing a shortage of aquatic forage that ducks, most notably Wigeon, are grazing wheat fields. While I have seen ducks in the wheat before it is nothing like the numbers I have seen this year grazing like they were geese or sheep. Nature finds a way to survive.

They sure are suckers for a some green grass next to a puddle to land in. Funny how one species will act a little bit different then all the others under certain circumstances.
