Wanted to get your thoughts on this. The first is do people shoot their pre 64's on a regular basis. Also, what do you think about the 264 winchester round? I bought it to shoot and have an old classic at the same time. Many people I've spoke to about it and run into say not to shoot it, but to keep it in the safe. Also, I've read tons of reviews on the 264 round and many are good and some are bad. I'll be honest, I will probably shoot the gun 5-10 times a year so the price of ammo is no concern. Just wanted to gets others thoughts as well.

They were built to be shot, not looked at. I have several, and love shooting those fine rifles.
America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

I shoot my .270 about once a year, just don't hunt with it. My Papa bought it new in '61. He hunted Mulies with it in NM so it is used, but not beat up. Shooting it aint gonna hurt the value if you are careful with it and don't ding it.

When I was younger I toted my pre 64 264mag on every hunt. I didn't know any better or have money falling out of my pockets to buy another deer rifle, so I hunted with it without a second thought. As I got older and my collection grew, I realized the value of the pre 64 (especially in this caliber) and decided to park it. I bought another 264 mag (Remington 700) and continue to shoot it to this day. If you can afford another rifle, save the pre 64 for a rainy day down the road when you may want to fund another rifle purchase and can get full value for it. If you like to both collect and shoot, I would consider tucking back the pre 64 and shoot another rifle.

I bought a .30-06 pre 64 Mod 70 some 30 years ago to hunt with. It's early '40's mfg, 100% original, near mint, and a real tack driver. I bought it at a gun shop so I do not know who the original owner was. It must have been an exciting day the day he bought it new and I'm sure he enjoyed hunting with it the first 40 years of it's life.
I can't tell you how many deer I've taken with it (there were 4 in 2011) and it still shoots as well and looks as good today as the day I got it. I don't plan on checking out anytime soon but when I'm gone hopefully someone will enjoy hunting with it as much as I do. God forbid it winds up sitting in a dark gun safe somewhere.

300 H&H and I shoot it every chance I get. Smoothest action and fine classic rifles-made to shoot.

Thats along the lines of what I was thinking. Bought it to shoot and to have a nice older rifle. I'll just be careful with it though. Thanks for the reply's.
