I was driving down my perimeter road today headed to check a feeder on the back forty. Came up on a pick up truck parked on neighbors place just off fence line. Since they don't hunt the place and don't run cows I thought it strange. (place is off the beaten path)

I came to a stop to call my neighbor and asked who was on his land. He didn't recognize truck and had not given permission for anyone to access property. Suddenly, full on camo joker comes walking up fence line with rifle in hand. Says guy who leases cattle rights said he could shoot a deer if he saw one and proceeded to ask me for the combo to my gate so he could get out to his new "hunting spot"! Guy actually told me he was trying to get him a buck today and asked me if it would be ok if he walked around my place later if he "couldn't get nothin'" where he was.

I kindly let him know I had better not hear a gunshot and left. A quick call back to the landowner to report the news.

Just got off the phone with him and he went down and pad locked the only gate to his place with said truck inside and called the cattle guy to come pick up the key personally to get his friends truck.

I'd like to be a fly on that wall. Make sure you KNOW that you have permission to hunt before you get on someone's land.

How could he "get him a buck" when the season had ended 2 weeks ago? This idiot needed a Game Warden on his a$$.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

How come people never call the game warden but instead call the landowner???? Let the game warden contact the land owner. By the time it's all said and done and all these phone calls made, the poacher is gone!!!!

I have the game warden on speed dial and am not affraid to get him after someone. This guy did know the cattle guys name and my read on him is that he was just out there to kill something and had no clue what he was doing. I did let him know about the extended season regulations and told him not to take a shot at anything until he cleared it with the LO. As mentioned, the LO doesn't mess around at all and lives within a fem minutes of his gate. This guy was lockied in and would have a heck of time getting out. I do think he will think twice about showing up uneducated for an opptunity to "get somthin" next time. If there was evidence of a kill or my read was different on the guy, I certainly would have taken the next step with a LE call.

I know that our G.W. has an area of several hundred miles to cover. I called him one time and he was almost 200 miles from us.
The local sheriff is sometimes a better option.
