I am going to do as much as I can this year to hold the deer on my property. They tend to migrate around our area chasing vegitation. I never have deer after mid-late November and then they come back to my feeders when whatever food source they were chasing plays out in mid-late January.
To set the stage I am in Upshur County. It is mostly pineywoods with a few hardwoods mixed in. I have one pipeline right of way that is 40-50ft wide and runs around 1000yds across the property. The rest of the property is complete tree cover with little or no direct sun.
I understand that planting early will mean two differnt or maybe even three different crops throughout the year.
I know I can plant oats, rye, and clover in the fall. What can I plant now or how early can I plant what? I will be doing a soil sample.
Does anything do well under the trees or do I need to stick with just the pipeline?

Get some soil tests done first. What is the tree mix off the pipeline? If it is dense and tall then nothing will likely grow under the canopy. Check with your county NRCS or Extension Agent to see what they have had success growing in your area. Cowpeas are always good in the spring/summer and small grains(oats, wheat, etc) mixed with clovers are good for the fall/winter. I would check to see if you can grow clovers year round in your soils.

plant what you have open, even if it's the entire 1000yds of pipeline ROW. Leaves and pine straw usually fall and choke off what's planted under the trees if it comes up.

I did get some oats up under the pines this past season but I spent alot of time raking, tilling, lime, fertilizer, I even brought in a 250 gallon tote of water and watered it to get it started good. This was for a very small plot maybe 20x60 or so. It not realistic for me to do that on a larger scale in the woods.

wp i hunt out in Cass on a right away similar to your setup. We planted clover and oats in the fall of 2010. We still had clover this year. We didn't plant last spring or last fall but the clover is still going strong. I'd highly recommend clover if you can get it established.
