A friend hunted last weekend about 20 miles sw of Coleman and averaged 2 covies a day.
I hunted 10 miles south of Albany on a 3,000 acre after deer season lease I had high hopes on yesterday and saw more deer (about 40) than quail all day (3 small covies)

My lease is in the Bronte area. Back in September, the landowner had very high hopes as the place was covered up in birds. Now, he says there are more birds than last year (when there were next to zero) but not nearly as good as he'd been hoping. Seems like there are birds in pockets -- if you are lucky enough to find a good pocket, hunting should be fair. Not so lucky, and it won't be worth the gas money to drive it . . . I will make a trip out there next weekend and give it try. Will let you know how it goes. Would appreciate a report from you when you're back, too.

I went Tuesday to a non-hunted lease between Bronte and Ballinger. With 3 above average German Shorthairs and four hunters we saw one covey of six birds. We did not shoot a shell. Where we were was dismal.

I dont hunt quail, but can tell you that I have not seen many all year untill the last two days of deer season. I was sitting in my stand and had about 30 Blues come into my feeder and about 15 Bobs come to it the next day. This was in the Blackwell area just north of Bronte. Instead of chasing a dog around all day, just set up next to a corn feeder in the evening and get your limit with one shot!

I ended up not going but have a report from those that did. They hunted Friday, Saturday and Sunday and found only 6 covey in all. Not as good as we hoped.

Not good to hear. I am going Thurs/Fri and will report back. My lease is very small but two years ago I was moving six or more coveys per day without a dog. Last year barely any birds. I'd be glad if I can move three coveys per day with my young dog . . .

One small covey (8 birds) was it this trip. While quail numbers are beyond disappointing, the good news is that I think the turkey numbers in the area will be very good this spring!

I was there this weekend with my brother and my cousin and his daughter from Bryan. We killed 10. Had fun though. You should have come up. Food was good Saturday night.
