Fiance's awesome grandparents bought me and the grand kids a spring turkey hunt in Erath county for Christmas! Been been hunting since I could walk but never for turkey. I would really like to use my bow with 100gr grim reaper broadheads. Looking for any and all stories and advice for archery hunting spring turkey to keep me pumped for the hunt. Go...

Get a popup blind with shoot through windows and practice from it.
Turkeys are not that smart but they are very wary, with fantastic eyesight and hearing.

Dial the poundage back on your bow. I shoot 60 lbs. for deer but dial that back to 45 or 50 for turkeys. Big, expandable broadheads have worked best for me. Like the poster above said, get a ground blind with shoot through mesh and practice a lot. Might have to cut a small hole in the mesh if using expandables. Put your decoy close to the blind. I like 10 yards- turkeys don't seem to mind a blind, even out in the middle of a field. Make sure the back of the blind is really dark- any movement and they will pick it off. You're having a hell of a year! Good luck turkey hunting.

Yea I seem to be havin a lucky streak lol. I have an archery pop up I planned on using as I am aware of their notoriously keen eyesight and I have a foam hen decoy my dad has used before. They bought me a diaphragm call...the sounds I make on it may be adequate for predator hunting, jut I figure I'll buy a box call. My bow is set at 63lbs and is shooting 260fps...is that too fast to shoot one with an expandable? My biggest concern is where exactly is a vitals shot on a Tom in various positions, tail down vs fanned?

Diaphram calls are easy if you know what words to say. The hard part is holding them in your mouth and not losing the seal over the top which makes a bad note. On your diaphram call for a basic cluck say "took" then string a few of them together like this "took took...took...took....took. Faster at first slower at the end. Do enough of this and you have what they call the cut or cutting call. Good for walking the ridge lines to locate gobblers. For a yelp say "Yee-Oke." The basic hen yelp is 4 or 5 of these on an even cadence. For a whine say "Sooo-ehhh" but draw it out. This is good for close in work. Practice and put it all together and you might end up in the middle of the woods working a gobbler. Your pulse will be 250 and you will hyperventilate. Wait till his head is behind the tree to move and aim at the base of the neck. Copper plated 6 shot out of a 12 ga full choke is good out to 50 yards. JT

Thanks for the info. I may use a shotgun but would love to zap one with the bow!

do shotgun then bow. But you need to practice your calls unless this is a guided hunt.
