Went by the pond at the lease this morning and there was 40-50 ducks on it. How would I set up my decoys for a pond hunt? It's not a small pond, I normally hunt large lakes.
Thanks for the advice
Chris

Shouldn't need more than a dozen or so decoys for a pond. I would put a tight bunch of six about 40 ft from the shore and kind of scatter the rest outside the tight bunch near the shore. Set up wherever you feel comfotable from the decoys based on wind. I tend to like the wind at my back so they fly towards me. Hope this helps.

You can go with the classic J-Hook or the standard V. If you really want to mix it up go with the W,X,Y or Z. Don't be like those barneys on Lake X and go with the new generation Q.

If you can't lick your own, you can't sit on the dog stand!

I would place no more than a dozen. U/V shaped, but leave a hole in the middle for the landing strip.

>=Wind direction (blowing out of the west, birds landing into the wind)
x=decoys

something along those lines

I feel that the typical "J", "U", or circle works best early in a season. Ducks fly in these patterns and this looks like a flock that landed not to long ago. Later in the season, I like to put out to groups/clusters with a landing strip between the two that corresponds with the wind direction. Just be sure that the landing strip is not to where they are landing right in your face.... Offset it a bit to keep yourself out of the equation.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the groups/clusters symbolize a relaxed flock. Also tie some of your decoy strings at the back of the weighted keel so that their heads will be in different directions. More realistic, and again, more relaxed looking.
