Im thinking about floating the Brazos south of PK...have heard that you can hunt from river and heard you cant. Anyone done this ? or know the ruling there.

I kayaked from the dam to 180 last spring. The land around the river is private, so if you hunt it you need to be in the water or on a sandbar I believe.

It's left up to interpretation IMO but your best bet is to contact the game warden and ask them about hunting a specific spot. They will be the ones with the ticket book so you might as well get the answer straight from them.

im not sure of the hunting legality their either, but i have floated that section many many times over the years. Yes it is all private along the bank. Including a boy scout ranch. Its about 20 miles from hwy 16 to hwy 4 where you can takeout at rochelles, and its about another 18 to 20 miles to hwy 180 where you can takeout just below the bridge. Rochelles will shuttle and pick you up. They are closed usually this time of year, but if you call and make arrangements, they usually will still shuttle you if you have your own gear.

I would call TPWD. They have an office right at the dam at the fish hatchery.

If a pellet hits private land, you are trespassing

BTW- the game wardens are working the rivers pretty hard this year and they are giving out tickets for trespassing.

Thanks!

I have spent a lot of time on that river. The regulations are pretty gray when it comes to where private property stops and the river (state property) begins. Basically it is supposed to be 1/2 way up the high water mark defines the river boundary. Therefore, you can use the shoreline if it is within this limitation. However, there is a lot of room for interpretation here so better just do what game warden says to be on the safe side.

If folks are interested in finding out more, check out the TPWD website and search for navigable water laws. That should get you to where you need to go to read the actual regulations.

I have heard so many different "river trespassing" regulations. The law is too grey in that area. It basically all boils down to the GWs opinion.

One upon a time the stripers were awesome on the river below PK as well. A few years back my brother and I caught 6 that were over 30 inches long one morning on our saltwater fly rods. Was an awesome morning. Here is a shot of one of them. This one was right at 30 inches. Sorry its so grainy. Its an old cameraphone pic.

Unfortunately the golden algae did a number on a lot of the bigger ones down there. Last summer we floated the section from hwy 16 to hwy 4 while the algae was in bloom and the banks were lined with hundreds upon hundreds of dead stripers, sandbass and baitfish. I couldt count how many large stripers we saw dead. Ashamed for sure, because that place used to be hot. The last couple of years that i have fished there have been very unproductive compared to years past.

that is correct, go to the TP WD website and look up an article call a River runs through it. This article addresses rivers and soul conservation lakes. It says that your projectile cannot cross the property lines of the neighboring properties or it is trespassing. I got educated on this last year when a neighbor who owns a Smallpiece of the lake that we own decided to start hunting, he pulled this card out of his pocket to try and make it difficult for us to hunt. We had to move a couple of our blinds were they would not call shot across the property line. Funny thing is same neighbor now is hunting off the dam and shooting across the property and I guess he expects me to not do anything about it.

Wrong! Up to normal water level is public...doesnt matter what a land owners deed says. And on specific spots...Game wardens wont give you a 100% most often because its the land owner that presses charges. He just writes the ticket...About pellets hitting private land...thats just plain wrong!
