I fed my GSP the exceed lamb and rice from sam's and switched to natures domain salmon and sweet potato from costco a while back. Her coat is better and she doesn't rub along side the house now. Poops are solid toilet trouts each time!

I feed Taste of the Wild. I looked long and hard for a grain free feed with high protein content. There are highter protein foods out there but they cost so much more so that is why I went with Taste of the Wild. It has been a great feed for my HIGH energy Vizsla.

that does have alot to do with it i am sure. you should see some of the dogs that are in the firled trials. they look like labs on steroids. I try to never say never but chances are VERY slim you would ever catch me near a feild trial... sad thing is, my opinion has been formed from alot of the trial folks on here.

That's understandable but you are sure missing out on seeing some amazing dog work. I prefer hunt test over field trials

My dog was on purina pro plan 5.5 years, she did well on it, but started gaining weight, really had watch how much I feed her, stools started getting real soft too... So made the switch last summer and see a huge difference in my dog, she looks great, stools good, and she eats all she wants and still looks great. So I'm liking it.

Eukanuba 30/20 is the standard kennel feed but I'm trying Taste of the Wild with the one or two that it doesn't agree with.
We'll see...

I'm glad a trainer chimed in with what her dogs eat. At least the trainers are feeding good food and not crap to save money

Pro or breeding kennels could save a ton of money feeding ol Roy or the like instead of a quality food and save a ton of money if they wanted. I truly believe a good quality food can even be essential to a dogs longevity.

My Brittanys and my hog dogs get Victor Professional Formula when working a lot and during the cooler part of the year. Its 26/18
They get Victor Normally Active 22/10 during the off season/hotter months.
I fed Diamond Premium for years the switched to Black Gold which I liked real well and the dogs did too.
But the Victor is just as good and better in some aspects and a lot less expensive, and when it became available here in Hondo, I switched.
Also, Victor is made in Texas.
Woodrow, on the other hand gets Pro Plan large breed puppy. Years ago, I had a Black lab and was in a position to watch all the litter mates as they grew up and mine and the breeder's were fed Pro Plan, a couple of others were fed Purina One and the rest something else.
You could line em up and tell from looking at their coats and overall condition which ones got Pro Plan.

I have tried quite a few different foods on my dogs over the years. I liked the Nutro feeds but, after they were bought by Mars foods the bags started shrinking and the price started going up.I used several of the Purina variants including ProPlan. Had some quality issues and the dogs for what ever reason just didn't like it. Because I have several dogs cost is a factor, but I need and want to feed high quality. For over a year now I have been feeding the Tractor Supply brand food. No corn, wheat or soy,so no un-digestable grains. My dogs love the small bites as a maintenance food. I slowly add the performance before hunting season to get them more fat and protien. I asked the guy at TS who makes it for them and he told me Call Of The Wild. Some have said it was by Diamond. I have tried my dogs on Diamond and they didn't care for it, so I think it may be Call Of The Wild? Great price the 35# bag is $27 for small bites and $32 for performance.

Royal canin, potato & rabbit. It is a prescription dog food that has zero gluten in it. My female vizsla has a food allergy to gluten that makes her break out, after doing a food trial for 90 days she cleared right out with this food. I am definitely not feeding this to save mOney$$!

Definitely not! I looked into that a few years back. They do direct ship but boy howdy was the shipping EXPENSIVE! I'm getting great results across the board on the Diamond Naturals. Could go cheaper, but think at expense of quality, could go more expensive and improve quality a tad, but having a farm allows me to supplement the dogs that need it... wholesome fresh eggs, boiled farm fresh lamb, fresh home grown chicken & goats' milk! My dogs are spoiled...

Royal Canin is a great brand. From their over the counter diets to their therapeutic diets. There prescription foods are our "go to" foods to treat almost anything. Sure enough you are not feeding that to save money. The hypoallergenic diets are the most expensive diets to feed when talking about prescription foods. Glad it is working so well for your dog.

If you need the prescription diet, it can certainly be worth it. That's why I had looked at them, in fact. We had a couple of dogs that were getting more particular as they got up in years. Vets always point folks toward science diet, but it's not the only game in town. We had good success cleaning their systems with home grown food for a time (our own chicken and lamb from the farm), then were able to maintain them with the Diamond Naturals. But like Kindall said, some dogs can get gassy on the lamb!

How many people actually research foods before settling on a brand? Research meaning, has the company had a recall, where does it get it's ingredients, what types of quality control processes do they have in place, etc.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You also have companies that make their chicken meal from beaks, feathers and feet. You have companies that don't. IMHO this is a big determining factor in deciding what food I feed my dogs. Just food (pun intended) for thought.

I have my pup on pro plan right now and she is having just a little bit of dandruff but not sure if it's the food or bcause my wife feels the need to give her a bath every 3-4 days which also takes the oil out of the coats and can cause dry skin.
