Hunters:

I am inviting you to get a copy of the Sunday, January 6, 2008 - Abilene Reporter News. On page 11C of the Sports Section is an article written by Jerry O'Bryant with the caption, "Any shot at good quail season". In the article are inputs from noted quail expert, Dr. Dale Rollins and quail guides in North and West Texas. In addition, it gives information on an upcoming lecture on "The Quail Wave: Lessons to be Learned From the Southeaster U.S.".

I am not going to repeat the whole article, but here is a sample just the first paragraph "Wild quail "are dead, they've moved or we just haven't found them," Big Country quail guru Dr. Dale Rollins said this week about the poor showing of the game birds in many sections of north Texas."
The article also gives some interesting information on the nesting habits of bobwhites and the rearing of the young.

If you are interested, it is an up to date article that you will find interesting and informational.

By the way, Dr. Dale Rollins contact information is:

(325) 653-4576 or d-rollins@tamu.edu for more information on the lecture.

Good Hunting,
Ron, Mud-Dabber

You can also go online, probably after Sunday, to see the article. The phone number for the newspaper is (325) 673-4271 if you are interested.

Regards,
Ron

I had always heard that the biggest danger to the Quail population in Texas was the spread of Fire Ants. Don't know how true that is, but since they arrived it sure seems like the Quail population has suffered.

What ever the cause I sure hope someone comes up with an answer sooner than later.

I had big hopes this season with a young dog to be able to actually go out and put him in some wild birds. But aside from just taking a trip to watch him run and hunt his butt off, it hasn't been much of a season.

We've got excellent quail populations on our lease in Dickens County this year. Not record numbers but they have recovered very well from our drought in 06.
