Leupold is the classic original, have a great name good reputation and quality glass. Nikon for the same money will be brighter, provide more magnification and sometimes include more features. However, Nikon customer service is sketch leaving some risk you take going the cheaper route. I've been through 10-12 nikon scopes on different deals and never had a single issue so I would often lean towards Nikon above leupold.

Vortex is the trump card. Similar in price to Nikon and debatable clarity/quality. I have only owned a crossfire which was pretty sorry but it was bottom of the road. I understand that vortex has been in a game a while and has a great warranty but they are still second tier in mine and most others minds.

For that money you are getting into the ziess conquest realm starting at $350 and most of these won't touch that scope.

Also if you go Leupold don't even consider anything Sub VX-2 and really VX3 if you want to hunt till the last seconds of hunting time. VX-1 cost me my biggest buck to date as I couldn't get a good look at it with 10 minutes of light left.

Also People get real gungho about Redfield "made by leupold" spend the money and get the real thing or look at one of the others.

I have a couple of the vx3 illuminated reticles for varmint hunting. Wish i had bought the vortex illuminated reticled for a feww hundred less instead. To get into the good glass in the illuminated market it generally cost atleast twice what i paid for my vx-3's. I wont spend any of my money on a nikon.

X2.....I was in the same shoes so I looked Leupold and Zeiss sideXside and the 44mm was x100000000000000 brighter than 50mm Leupy

Zeiss Conquest. Have them on all of my rifles. At first or last light if you are trying to decide whether to pull or not, the Zeiss will tell you if he's the buck you want. That is worth the extra cash IMO.

I Like your name....so I'll give you my honest opinion.

vortex viper series has better optical quality than leupold VXiii. I haven't owned a nikon monarch lately, so I'm not sure about that. I can also tell you that a vortex viper I had, had better optical quality to me than a leupold mark IV I had a couple years ago.

if you want to spend a little more, then go with zeiss conquest... hands down, they are the best scopes in that price range. They're not the best, but at 1k and under I don't know anything that beats them.

I dropped my vortex razor binoculars a few months ago and sent them in on the same day that I sent a leupold VXIII that was not holding zero. I got the vortex binos back in 3 weeks. I got the leupold back in 2 months.

Cheaper alternative to Leupold. Of those listed performance-wise Leupold vx3.

VX-3 I love mine. A Nikon cost me a big buck at last light so screw em... OK, it was a cheap Nikon, but it was still a Nikon. Yes Im bitter.

But really the VX-3 in 4-12 is what I have and am very happy with it. Low light and long distance it performs awesome. I havent tried many alternatives, because I havent had too.

i switched from leupy to nikon monarch on my ar15 and on my 25.06 and have been very happy.
crisp images and great light gathering.

i have nothing against leupy, but think they are living a bit on their name these days in the sub $500 range. but i will say i like their high end stuff they have come out with recently.

have not tried vortex, but would be willing to

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

My 300 win has a Leup vx3, or vx III cannot remember which.

For my target gun, Vortex Viper PST just trumped Leupold's Mark 4. Looking at the two side by side, the PST was clearer and easier to find and keep the reticle in sharp focus than the Mark 4. Hurt me to do it because I really wanted the Mark 4, but considering the cost savings it was fairly easy to make the decision.

Check out the new Leupold VX-R line. Really nice. Illuminated reticle is a plus if you hog hunt.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, b/c they know not victory nor defeat"- #26 TR
