I've been spoiled by friends who give me a boat ride to the spot or a jeep ride around the corner to a private wetlands with my own blind so I went out to a walk-in spot that I scouted a few weeks ago today. The water was another 300-400 yards down since last time I was out there and it just about wore me out trudging through the mud with my deeks and layout blind but I got a Bull Can and Pintail Hen to come within range and dropped them with 1 shot each. After that it seemed like all that came within range were more Canvasbacks

Congrats on the Can. I am done with the search for a bull Can. Mine is on the wall. Next big challenge is a wall worthy "Pin". Way to go Ed.

Cans are almost as bad as coots here. It's a plague! Given the choice 'd rather pass on shooting Cans then pass on shooting Coots. You will get some Cans out where you hunt Army Chad.

I forgot the part of the story where I had to use my Beretta as a crutch to get out of the mud. I had the stock buried up to the fore-end in mud. I sloshed it around in the water after my decoys were out and knocked the big stuff off. Worked perfectly since I was 2 fer 2. I cleaned it out with the water hose when I got home then broke it down for a good cleaning and it still has no rust after 4 seasons.

My blind companion had me laughing on that hunt. She looked like a chocolate lab she had so much mud on her and then when we went to get in the layout she pushed me to the side and nuzzled up on my shoulder. It's nice having a little smaller female that can fit side by side with me in the layout blind.
When we picked up I found I had thrown some decoys in water that was too deep and sent her out to get them but she just swam around them looking for a bird that wasn't there. I had to resort to the rock trick to get her to understand that this time I wanted the decoy.
I love hunting with my dog.

Cans are almost as bad as coots here. It's a plague! I had to pass on at least 6. It's like they knew I already had my limit on Cans and they taunted me.
