Fair way to cut lease members? What would you do? #2885675 01/01/12 12:20 AM

I heard today that our landowner is selling part of his property/our deer lease. There are 3 of our members hunting on the piece that will be sold. We have 11 members total. How would you decide who gets to stay on the rest of the lease and who will be cut? I want to hear a few replies and then I'll post up what our lease manager did.

I would ask if anybody was planning on leaving this year first.

cut the 3 that were hunting on that part of the lease. if they dont have the land to hunt on, they cant hunt. sucks for them but thats how i would do it.

Ask who's leaving... Then go by seniority; if it just so happens to be a tie with a cpl members those names go in a hat and names drawn stay for remaining spots with odd men out allowed to have names placed on a waiting list for future membership.

I was once on a lease that every year you had to be invited back. That took care of that. If you didn't get invited back in January you knew to move on.It was a big lease and the owner always had control of who he wanted back.

I would have to agree with asking first of who definately is coming back as of today, and not "let me think about it, and I'll let you know" answer.

I would then tell everyone what is going to happen and that your only choice to be fair is to go by seniority.

There shouldn't be a problem as long as you do it now, and don't sway from what you say!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I'm curious now as to what he actually did!

What he does, and if not fair is going to end up being a whole heap of trouble and sleepless nights for him, you can bet on that!

Ok, sounds like everybody thinks like I do as far as what's fair. Our lease manager went by seniority. Nobody was planning on leaving so that's what he did. It just so happens that I am one of the 3 that will be leaving because of this. The 3 hunters that are on the piece of property to be sold will move into my spot and 2 other newer member's spots. I was pretty ticked about it at first but after thinking about it a while I guess that was the only fair way to do it.

I feel for you, but what's fair is fair!

Look at it as an opportunity to look for something better and maybe team up with the guys that got booted as you know who they are, and three is easier to find a lease for than one (more people looking).

I might also add, that although you got booted, don't burn your bridges.

Tell the lease manager you understand his decision and respect it, and that if an opening comes up in the future you would like your name at or near the top of the list.

Check with "justwingem" over on TFF and see if he'd be interested. He has a lease out around Ozona.
