Did not say they were stupid.....just ain't that smart. Giving them too much credit for being able to remember what they did last week or last month. Hell, we have caught the same wild hogs several times in our traps over a period of months. We let the sows go and keep the 30, 40, ....up to 80 pounders and cut the rest loose. We can catch them again a few weeks later. Ain't that smart!!!

maybe the ones over 80lbs keep going back into the trap because they know you will let them out?

"sign shows that the hogs are eating right up to the traps door, but not going in the trap." we only put the bait in the back of the traps and catch tons of them. We put about 100lbs, they can smell the corn, dont have to lead them to it. I also normally back them up off a travel route, road, creek, etc and push the trap up in a brush pile and cover it up some.

I have 2 traps and have never trapped a hog. One is home made with a spring door. The other is a guillotine back by my creek.
The spring door one has the door propped open and corn inside. The corn has been there for a couple of months. Lots of tracks in the area but they don't go near it.
The guillotine was put there by an experienced trapper. He never caught anything in it but it is still there. I occasionally bait it when I'm there for the weekend and catch nothing. When I leave, I trip the door. Once they pushed it about 10 ft. to get the bait. Lots of tracks and wallows on the creek close to the trap. I've tried rubber boots and gloves to no avail. I don't have to move the damn thing. They do that themselves.
I do have some varmit trapping experience from quite a few years back.
All in all, they don't do any real damage and I'm not mad at them. The TexasBoars website has some seemingly sure fire baits but I haven't messed with them.
They are about like fire ants. I can't really do anything to erradicate them so I just live with them.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Never had hogs get trap shy at my place. I set one trap, a coupla oe weeks ago, at my favorite trap and caught 13 hogs the first night, shot the hogs in the trap. The second night I had 8 more, at about 100 lbs each. Set it both times with corn right out of the bag. Have not set the trap since, got tired of cleaning hogs.

Same here with setting latch on baited trap. I too think it is scent. Then I started using sticks to poke inside trap to set the "latch".

The myth of hogs not going right back in over pig blood is busted for sure!!!
Also, that hog blood, scat, and corruption is pretty good cover scent, too.
I think if you get one good herd boss, usually a sow, that actually knows what a trap is, or at least her instincts alert her to it, then that whole sounder will shy from it. JMHO.

Had 2 bunches of hogs come to feeder this last Sunday evening. 33 in one and 7 in the other. Did noy shoot one, not enough time to mess with it. I have not set or even baited either of our two traps this year. No one hunting with me that wants hogs. However, this being the last weekend for bucks on our lease, everyone is shhowing up to hunt together for the first time this season!! Therefore, I am going to bait and set the traps Friday evening and with a little luck we may catch a few. Really not looking forward to all the work because I usually do most of it. But, gotta thin them out.....
