Marc...this isn't the first time I have heard of it. I believe it is the middle finger. I know you know which one I am talking about I am sure you see them all the time (sorry, couldn't resist) When the guy mentioned class action it kind of made the legit-ness of this argument dwindle in my mind. Also the fact that I know Dave has one and has never said anything also game me pause. Middle finger...must be the trigger guard. I heard the when they came out with the 3.5" Vinci they made some slight changes...wonder if it was addressing this.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Yeah, I was just teasing. Kind of like how I own a Glock and don't understand people who pay more for other semi-auto pistols Not a good comparison really since the Glock is a semi as well.

It's legit. There are people, not sure enough for class action, but I have seen quite a few people talking about it. I am not sure I wouldn't put a piece of athletic tape on it to keep it from pinching and hurting though. Problem solved. Although I do understand the thought of taping your finger or the gun and paying what they cost that they shouldn't do it. I think if you patterned and counted your 3.5 vs 3 you would see you aren't getting near the advantage you think you are by the longer shells. For the true heavy payload advantage you need to get a 10ga...the bigger bore allows for better patterns on the heavier payloads that the 3.5's are shooting. Granted that is 2 guns vs being able to do it with 1. You're right, need has nothing to do with it...it's want.

I'd think the longer shells would give you a longer shot column, so that sort of thing wouldn't show up on a piece of 2D cardboard when you pattern the gun? The pattern may not be wider, but it at least should be deeper.

The best gun is the one that will fit you best. As far as brands and models go, I believe they've been named already. Benelli superblack eagle 2, Benelli M2, Benelli Vinci, Benelli super Vinci, browning Maxus, browning silver, beretta extrema 2, beretta A400 (hasn't been out long but is suppose to be good), Winchester SX3....I personally own the Benelli M2 and am in love with it, simply fits me great as well as the super black eagle (same gun, just shoots the 3.5 inch). Pick one of the brands and find which one fits the best.
By the way, don't ever ever ever ever ever buy a new 870...if you do make sure it's an old one or a wingmaster.

I personally like the FRANCHI I-12. Handles very well. Only drawback (not a problem in my opinion) is it is chambered for 2 3/4" & 3" only. I have both the Franchi I-12 and Benelli SBE. I got the Franchi for a 100 less than I paid for the Benelli 10 years ago. For the money I love the Franchi, but I keep grabbing the old faithful when I head out the door.

I couldn't say, I haven't used 'em all. But, I own three Berettas, 390 and 391. Dead bird.

Why not? Not a fan of synthetic stocks?

They are junk...not the quality of the old ones. I have a fairly new 870 Supermag...not the best shotgun in the world. If you are going to save money just buy a used one...I think that's Featherduster's point.

I have a synthetic stock 870 that is only 3 years old, put ~800 - 1000 shells through it so far with no problems. Last weekend I hosed it down to get all of the mud off before cleaning it... edit - I also use full synthetic motor oil on it instead of expensive gun oil.

I'm glad it's worked out well for you. Mine has problems ejecting shells from time to time.

What is the best valued auto shotgun out now. Wanting it for duck hunting primarily. I hope you got the information you were looking for, because there have been a lot of responses, and evidently I hijacked your thread. Sorry 'bout that. I'm going to head for the door now...

As netboy mentioned the Baikal MP153 is actually a great value. But at the same time it's super heavy, swings like a 2x4, Huh?????? Baikal MP 153 7.6 lbs (per their website) Beretta Extrema II 7.8 lbs

As netboy mentioned the Baikal MP153 is actually a great value. But at the same time it's super heavy, swings like a 2x4, and not very easy to clean...also it has an adjustable deal that you use based on the loads you are shooting light or heavy....the more expensive shotguns just do it.
I think they are pretty simple to clean. I've never had to adjust the gas on any of mine.

Baikal MP 153 7.6 lbs (per their website) Beretta Extrema II 7.8 lbs I owned one that was wood. I'm guessing the black ones are lighter. Weight isnt really an issue anyway when duck hunting...in fact more weight can help reduce recoil.

Yeah I had one I bought used...it had problems until I figured out how to adjust the settings and then it worked great. As for cleaning yeah it was a pain in the [censored]...if you have one for a long time obviously you'll figure it out. I didnt have mine long enough to ever get too comfortable with taking it all apart. Another guy who will remain nameless took his apart and lost a part...lol. Bottom line it's not like taking apart a benelli.
