I sighted it in and put it in a gun rack on the front of a 4 wheeler to ride to the stand a few times and shot a couple of deer with it this season. The only thing is that the bullet did not hit where I was aiming. I took it to the range this past weekend and it was grouping close together, but the group was about 5 inches low and 3 inches right at 100 yds. I sighted it all in again and shot about four shots through it that grouped within an inch right aroud the bullseye. On shots 5,6,7,and 8 the bullets were hitting several inches away again. What is the problem? The only thing I can think of is that maybe the scope is not holding true and the rattling on the 4 wheeler and shooting the rifle is messing it up. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

BTW the scope is a Redfield 2x7 that came with the rifle when My dad bought it in the late 70's or early 80's.

Check all ring & mount screws.

I could be the scope or a couple of other things to check:

1. Make sure your barrel channel has good spacing. You should be able to take a dollar bill and run it under the barrel until you reach the screw holding the barrel. If there are spots where the dollar will not slide find a big dowel rod and some sandpaper and sand it out a little bit.

2. Another thing you might try is a good thorough cleaning to clean all the copper out of the barrel.

3. If those things are both acceptable then I would try another scope and see what happens.

I have 2 788's and love that particular gun. If there is something wrong with the stock let me know as I have an extra in the safe.

what everyone else said - more than likely the scope is just not holding up to the jarring.

Thanks for the info. I have checked all the mounting screws for the scope sveral times and they are all tight, however the barrel is not floated. I cannot get a dollar bill in there at any place. The rifle was cleaned beofre the season. I love the rifle also. I just want it to be accurate, and would like to know what to do to get it there. Thanks agian

Last time I had that problem with my 788,(in 308), the problem was the scope mount screws were loose, eventhough the rings were nice and snug. I'd agree with LeeC #3 option, try a different scope. You might be right, you might be loosing zero due to the ATV jarring and viberating the crosshairs out of wack. As far as the barrel being free floating, I've never even checked mine cos its a tack driver as is.

Hope its something as simple as the scope, good luck.
