I've always wanted a lever action 30/30. It may be from growing up watching John Wayne slinging his lever actions on the back of a horse. Anyone own a Marlin 336SS? See: http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/centerfire/336SS.aspxI was thinking it would make a good hog or short range deer rifle. Don't think I would mount a scope. I like the idea of having an open sight rifle around.

they are good guns.
marlin certainly got it right with the micro grooved barrel. i think they look an handle fine with a scope(opposed to a 94, in which it takes away from the gun).
a 30-30 is a great 75 yard deer rifle equipped wiht open ( or a peep) sight

Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

Got to tell you guys...30/30 is a lot better gun than just 75 yards....Dont believe the stereotype of under 100yards for the gun. Have shot deer out to 200 yards with mine since i got it for Christmas about 16 years ago...I do like my 25/06 but I still break out the ole 30/30 to show some guys what the legend can do.

i would limit my shots to 75 yards and under with open sights.
i would limit my shots to 150 yards due to bullet energy though

Yes, you can also get that gun in .35 Remington -- which may be an even finer choice for those 75 yard and under shots. Good call on no scope.

The 30-30 is a good gun for hunting deer in Texas, hell I have seen folks in Colorado take elk at 100 yards+ with one.
People are down on it because it is not one of the new "Glamour" rounds.
Would I own one, no.
Am I telling you to hunt with nothing but a 375 H&H, No.
30-30 is a fun gun to have and with what you are wanting to do is more than enough gun. JMO.

I'd go for the 1895CB if it was me I like the octogon barrel. I have one in 45-70 with a 26" barrel.

You might try the Hornady Leverevolution in the 30-30. I used them this year on a doe. All I can say is awesome. I am getting groups from a rest that rival some bolt guns. While not my go to gun, it sure is fun.

I have two, both hand-me-downs. I use my Grandpa's, and my son uses my Dad's. We both take deer just fine. very accurate. One has a scope, and the other doesn't.

I'd much rather have that than the 30/30. Been wanting one for a long time now and will own one someday.

Great-shooting rifle in my opinion, JP.
I've got an old JC Higgins 30-30 made by Marlin and use it every season. It's tough as a boot, too. Ammo is fairly cheap and easy to get.
As far as 200+ yard shots, I wouldn't bet on it, but if you get good with it and your eyes are still good and sharp, then anything under that, deer are DRT.
My eyesight is not as good as it once was, so I limit my shots to under 100 yards with it. The way the land lays around here, and the fact that most of my hunting is in woodlands, 100 yards is okay with me though.
You won't regret getting one. The only Marlin I've ever seen that wasn't all that good was one purchased from WalMart - Model 336W - the action is not smooth and the lever won't stay locked very well when there's a round in the chamber.

I have a Marlin 30-30 336T. It is a straight stock saddle gun with the brass ring. I've killed several deer with it. My Grandpa bought it at Gibson's in the early 70's for $70. It looks like a new gun today.

I've got a Winchester model 94 I bought back in the early eighties, and it's my walking around gun.
Open sights, fast aiming, and I've taken a lot of game with it, over the years.
I tried the Hornady Leverevolution ammo at the range when it first came out, and I couldn't believe the groups I was getting at 100 yards with my old eyes, and never thought I could shoot that good with open sights.
I paid $125.00 when I bought it new, and now guns that aren't as good of shape as mine are going for about $700 on up, since Winchester stopped making the 94.
My Grandson will get this one!

I love the looks of the guns but not a fan of the round, although probably more deer have been killed with that round than any other! Im getting old i would have to have a scope on it if im going to hit anything over a hundred yards.

The good thing about the 30-30 is that the bullets used are very specific to the cartridge and it's performance. The bullet manufacturers have also had a lot of time to get bullet construction perfect for the cartridge. I see a lot of critters killed and those killed with the 30-30 are pretty much dead in their tracks.

I have the marlin with the micro groove barrel great little gun switched to the hornady's last year. Put the burris 3-9 with bullet drop comp on it. I let a buddy use it this year he is going and buying one. great little gun short and easy to get in and out of the blind, pick up or what ever. The new hornadys I think only drop like 4-5 inches at two hundred. I know with the burris scope its close to dead on with the first mark at two hundred.

i killed my first deer and many after with a 30/30. then i thought i had to get fancy with bolt action and scope. i miss my 30/30 and where i hunt now it would be perfect.
I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.
