the best ideal for you would be the Sam Houston National forest. you can head up 59 north to Cleveland, the hit 2025 to Coldsprings. You will see the signs. Or you could take 45 north up to new waverly. I beleive the road is called 1375. Head west towards lake Conroe.

Call the forest service to get more info.
It is not free though. The permit is $48.00

That will probably be the cheapest route for you.I dont know many people just letting strangers hunt their land for free. If it's worth having, it is worth payin for!

I don't think there is such a thing anymore. Public hunting land and that will cost you $48.

Thought I had replied to this already....Im lossing my memory.
As far as free land in Texas..wel lgood luck with that!
Even if you marry into it it might still not be free.

The APH is the best bet.
Despite severals discomfort with TPWD,they do as wel las they could for a state that is 98% behind lock and key and not all of it is even allowed or marketed,ie open for day or lease hunting at any amount of $$$$!
Yes....thats right... not all privatel lands and ranches allow hunting, atleast year after year!
Best bet use the APH ,scout the areas and learn the seasons work your time off and the calnder to your best bet.
Most folks cram the weekends and especially opening weekends.

Your down by the SHNF. A very good bet,160000 plus acres divided amongst Walker,Montgomery and San Jacinto counties.

Start a small fund for next year now. Put a few dolalrs away every check and you can either Hunt APH and maybe a few day hunts on pay leases or save enough to geto na a lease. Some can still be had for less than $1000 a season.
If you find anyone you know that has land even smaller acrerage but with game, offer to hel pwork the palce in exchange for acouple days hunting.
Again good luck!

When I am stupid they dont mind me; when Im right they want to scold me....

Im not familiar with the lakes near you but many of the Corps of Engineers lands are free. Some of those lands hav e been turned over to tPWD for them to manage as a WMA . GO to http://www1.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/index.htm to see central and north tex lakes and regs or this one http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/states.cfm?state=TX also check with the forest service to see if they still have land other than those managed by TPWD.

I have hunted several of these lands closer tot he Metromess but the hog hunting is hit or miss. I apply for a permit to hunt deer and ducks at some lakes and usually have meat in the freezer. No trophies mind you but I'm a meat hunter anyway.
