I know in East Texas the lumber companies tend to have a system of paint to mark their land vs. competitors etc. rather than installing fence. Does anyone know the "code" to the colors as to which company has which color? I know the company I currently lease from uses a Purple-ish color and I'm interested in leasing the land next to it which is a lighter or "brighter" blue paint to make my whole hunting area larger. I'll still keep the little place I have now, just want to add on to it. Is there a magical decoding ring at the bottom of a Rice Krispies box for this?

I think those colors are for no trespassing. The are supposed to be purple I think. But colors fade. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

all the colors mark the no trespassing basically. I know I've seen a ton of different colors out there, and I'm just wondering if there is a decoder to all of it?

I think Nate is talking about ID colors. Right, Nate?
I have no idea what they are, but I bet you could search on Google for the different Forest/Timber/Paper Company sites and it might tell you.

If you are currently leasing from one company, why not just contact the office you do your leasing thru and ask them who owns the surrounding acreages.
Either that or go to the county tax office or USDA office and ask them who owns what property.
I think there are easier and faster ways to find out land ownership than sorting out colors and trying to figure out a "code" that may be totally non existant.
The differences in those colors could have something to do with differences in the ages of those stands of trees and where they fit in the harvesting program.

Yeah Big Orn, I'm talking about color ID basically. I know they exist and each company is issued a specific color to use on their land in Texas, what I don't know is what color goes to what company..

Yes helomech, I'm familiar with the posted purple, but all of these markings in different colors match that law but in a rainbow of colors. I know the lumber company I lease from uses this brighter purple color, and IP has been using an Orange in my area. I guess I'll try calling my contact at my current lumber company and see if he can shed some light on it. I just don't want him to think I'm leaving the one I got now because I want BOTH places

Why would we cut down all of the beautiful trees that we have if those east Texas guys are willing to cut down theirs?

Crazyhorse has the right idea. The color code will just confuse you and send you through a long line of beauracratic BS to get what you are looking for. Of course the easiest thing to do would be ask the Landowner you currently lease from. If they do not know, then you need to locate your tract of land on a Tobin Map or possibly even a google earth map and go to the County Tax Office. They will have a name and address for all Landowners in the County. The hardest part will be identifying your exact tract. They might be able to help you with that, but I would recommend locating it on a map prior to going to the Tax Office. I am a Petroleum Landman and I deal with tax offices and courthouse people on a regular basis and they are not always the sharpest tools in the shed. It helps if you know exactly what you are looking for when you get there.

There's really a code, certain colors mean certain things...hardwoods only, leave the hardwoods, pulp trees only, and to what degree they are going to clean/strip the harvested trees, my wife's uncle was a buyer for paper companies, I used to have a card with that stuff on it somewhere...
