I might hunt a small private place near Faifield opening weekend. If not either Pat Mayse or Cooper. I need to scout more at Cooper, and plan on doing some this weekend.
I'm bummed that Pat Mayse shortened its bow season to Oct. 1-15 and then Dec. 1-15. Last year was all of regular bow season plus a 2 week late season. Less opportunity and higher prices...

Couldn't afford to get the Type 2 yet so it looks like I'll be up in a pine tree somewhere in Davy Crockett.

I have a dumb question, I know you hunt alot of public land, and I have never. I hear talk of yall doing your scouting, my question is, so you mark your spots, telling other hunters this spot is taken, or what? How do yall from keeping 2 hunters from taking the same spot or area. I was just curious.

I don't hunt much public land anymore, but when I was, I would mark the spot with a GPS.

I've seen a tree with a big red ribbon around it. But who knows how long it's been there? I haven't had a confrontation with someone who said I was in their spot. If I did and they wanted that spot that bad, I would move. But if I was walking to my spot and someone else beat me to it... Too bad for me. I'll keep walking. It's public land after all. As far as I'm concerned it's first come first serve. I like trying to find a spot as far from humanity as I can anyway.

I'll be at Alazan Bayou, It's bow only all season long. and markers are fine but it is first come, first serve so you better get there earlier than me is all I can say,if you want a certian spot.

We mark our locations with GPS and usually have a backup location for that reason alone. I haven't had my location taken yet so it's been ok. What we have noticed in the past is alot of hunters won't go in very far and they end up 300 yds from the road. Not all but most. I have seen it too many times at Old Sabine River Bottoms. We will walk miles if we have to and it has paid off. Let me tell you this story, last bow season I spent several trips locating a good spot to set my stand in. I found a perfect funnel and marked my spot. Well the friday before opening morning I went in and spent several sweating hours setting up my stand, checking where my shooting lanes are and all that good stuff. Then I left my location from the opposite direction I came to my stand and not 60 yds from where I set up around the corner all I saw was streamers dangling on the trees leading to a leanto stand. I mean like 50 yds of streamers. It was like a runway. I could not beleive it but I sucked it up and prayed this guy was a smart hunter and would not mess up my hunt. Coming in late, smoking, noisy or whatever. Opening morning I was in my stand 1 hour before light and he was right behind me. He didn't cause any problems and 2 hrs later I shot my first buck with a bow (9 pointer). I looked back and realized how close I was to relocating my stand and I am so gad I didn't. The other hunter was an older fella and we ended up chatting and he helped me take some pics. Super fella. I know there are some horror stories but I bet the good ones offset them.

I hate seeing streamers in the woods on public land. It is littering, and it is poor woodsmanship. Why would anyone want to advertise their spot anyway? I think the reflective tacks are a much more acceptable alternative.
While I'm complaining I might as well also mention my disdain for people leaving scent bombs in the woods. Again, pure laziness - and leaving them educates the deer concerning what is and what is not the "real thing."

Coolhand, I agree with you about educating the deer and the litter these scent bombs and streamers create. On a previouse lease that had not been hunted for 5-6 years we found scent bombs still hanging from limbs. How long do yall think it takes for one of these to naturaly go away?

Come from the swamps of Louisiana, don't need no compass, streamer or gps we know da' woods too good.Really, no real way of marking a spot and not have anyone hunt it.When I first started hunting public land down there one of the state parks made folks have a hunter number that you had to mark your stand with;didn't stop folks from setting up near you. But,on my first trip there I found an oak flat full of sign that I was going to hunt;opening day had a guy sitting on the trail to my tree.Went to my second option tree...and nada,zilch,zero....the next day decided to get there a little early..so did the other fellow..while walking in he flashes his light in my direction...off i go to my second option tree, deep in the swamp with no compass or gps in the dark....had to go thru a huge palmetto thicket;arrived just after day break and as I moved a palmetto from in front of me..right staring me eye to eye is a big doe right at my tree.Cussed, fussed and climbed the tree and about 5 minutes later 4 deer show up to feed....took a 6-pt in the group at about 11 yards...met the guy I tripped over both mornings at the check in station we've been friends ever since...don't think he killed any deer with his bow that year though.

Last time I hunted public land on opening day I ran into people everywhere. The problem is that I stalk deer and don't sit on a stand. I know you all probably hate me now. I get to my spot before shooting time and just when I can see enough to shoot, I begin stalking. I went my usual way and then saw a ladder stand with a person. Turned 90degrees walked 50 yards and saw another person. Walked a different direciton and saw a third person. I then decided to go home. On the way out I passed two other people. This was a place at Richland Chambers I had hunted for 3 years and only seen one person in the past. Now it is closed to bow season without a draw permit.

I won't be stalking anything at Davy Crockett this year. Some drunk redneck will think I'm one of those deer that PETA put an orange vest on a year or two ago.

Porkchop, I'll be on the north side of the lake. Have you ever hunted the South Sulfur unit that they open in December, just curious if it was worth the time to scout a spot around there?
