Had 20 come to the feeder tonight hit two with one shot but by the time I racked the bolt they all scattered and didn't get a follow up.
Is there a big gain to going with a .308 platform compared to say 5.56 or 6.8?

When it comes to what?
There is a big gain in weight, price, size, ect..
Is shooting hogs the only thing you'd use it for? If yes, why not get a sporter saiga in 7.62x39? 350.00, bam you're done.
You wouldnt be under gunned with a 5.56 in my opinion. And with a battlecomp your follow up shots would be wicked quick.

mainly its either add an 5.56 and take to rifles to the stand one for deer one for pigs or pony up and lay down bigger bucks on the ar-10 and sell the deer rifle.

AR15 will likely be more controllable in this scenario. I did a similar thing a month ago on a sounder. Thought I only killed 3, but am still finding remains of others. Believe now I got 5.

Heavier gun, more recoil is not going to make you more accurate or faster. Lighter gun just as accurate maybe your faster
I wouldnt upgrade size just because you cant get on them. The only thing they are going to do is bleed more.
Im sure many are disagreeing right now. But on my best day witha huge herd from and elevated stand I could only get 4-5 confirmed

Scot, I know your not a reloader(yet) but depending on your "range" why not get a blackout upper. Plenty of muscle for deer and the hogs. Put that suppressor you want on it and be done. If you still want a .223, buy a varmint upper for $500 and you have 1 rifle that serves both purposes

I have both and like the 308 for hogs. But unless they are out in a field 80+ yards from cover, 2-3 shots will be all you can get. Make 'em count!

Making them bleed is fine by me...
Just curious if the .308 is much more likely to have them bleed out than a 5.56.
If I have to spend more than about $600 on the build I want the rifle to double as a deer rifle and I would feel better with the .308 for deer/auodad.

Got into hogs couple weeks ago. Small window about 20 feet across at 70 yards. Two pigs droppes with 2 shots. Alexander arms overwatch upper spikes lower ziess conquest scope 3.5-10 on lowest setting. Saw bullet hit both pigs. Nect killed two coyotes at same place. Same result. In that heavy upper on an ar can see bollet hit. Recoil is that light and that being the case followup eatra shots are quick. Load used hornady 123gr amax. No exit on shoulder shots on 70 &80 lb pigs but both shoulders broke.

Or you could build a trap for a couple hundred bucks, catch the whole herd, and shoot them at your leisure. I would personally build the trap catch them and then shoot them with a new AR-10 that I would buy for the purpose. I've been trying to justify a 308 for a while now.

i also saw a show the other day where a guy was hunting in west texas for auodad and shot one at a 180yds using a AR with 20in barrel using DRT 79gr hollow point, so in my opinion a 223/5.56 is fine for pigs, deer or auodad

For the trap use t-post and cattle panel to make a corral with a big drop gate. You can put the hurt on the hog population quick with a couple those. My problem has been hogs run faster than I can aim.

The AR-15's are lighter, cheaper, and handier than th 308 length versions.
Of course a 308 is a whole step up in terms of power. Frankly, I'm of the camp that if I cant get it with my 70 grain TSX in 5.56Nato, then I need to step up to to my 7mm rem mag.
But a dedicated hunting upper in 300 blackout does seem nice, too. : )

why the discussion...AR15-.223...AR10-.308....no comparison when it comes to performance, the recoil is not much more since the .223 is nil. the larger frame of the AR10 makes a difference, I own several of both, but from being an old grunt from 40 years ago, I would rather be armed with a .308. I know first hand the difference when I need it.

I went ahead and picked up one of each. I'll try to report if I can notice a difference in the new few days.

Get the 6.8 in the AR-15 platform and have enough pop for deer and pigs as well as a lighter gun and controllable recoil.
How much are suppressors?

In the past, I have had good luck with an SKS with the 7.62x39 and managed to get 4 at a time using this but the gun is not that handy. Picked up an AR and so far, have only had opportunity to get down on a couple of large groups and only confirmed 2 from one group and 1 big ole sow from the other.
Started foaming at the mouth for a 7.62x39 upper for the AR but researched it quite a bit and saw the limitations of that load in an AR platform. Then stumbled across the 300 blackout and started researching that combo. So far, I have dies, case trimmer and 200 rounds of brass inbound for the blackout.....and I'm shopping for uppers!

Want to get several at a time with one shot and slow down several more for follow up shots?
Place a small propane bottle (like the green ones you screw a lantern to)on the ground and pile corn around it. Tanerite would work well too.
