Wanting to get a 22 rifle with scope for my son to shoot. Hopeing he'll shoot this for a year or two getting used to shooting with the scope before eventually getting him a youth rifle in 7mm08.

Hard to answer your question without enough information. How old is your son? How big? Do you want bolt action or semi auto? Has he shot before?

My son started with a Crickett rifle. Very small, single shot bolt action. When he turned 11, I got him a S&W M&P15-22. He likes the AR style rifle and this is when he really began to enjoy shooting. My Ruger 10/22 was still too big for him at this time. He still shoots open sights on his .22, but shoots with a scope on his .243.

10/22'S are great and have alot of aftermarket components. Plus they arent very expensive. I love mine and got my daughter shooting it over Thanksgiving.

However, I would love to have one of these. The stock is adjustable which will help with fitting. But this cost more.

Whats your budget? define 'best'? the REAL 'best' .22's start around $1000, for an Anschutz, and the like, and go to 10,000 quick. Without glass. Barebones. And that doesn't include ammo. 'Best' guns require 'best' ammo - about $10 a box/50, and up. How 'Best' do you want?

Cz makes one of the most accurate 22lr out there for the price IMO...savage is also good way to go....Anschütz of corse will be better than most anything but you gona have to finance it cuz its so high....or at least i would..as far as 10-22 they are hard to beat all around except for your wanting to get your kid familiar with a rifle more like hes gona be using in the big calibers.....i would prefer staying with a bolt

Not looking to spend $1,000. Looking at probably the $200-$300 range.

Saw the crickets, but want something that we can both shoot for years to come. Not really wanting something that he'll just shoot for a year or two than then put aside.

Any major brand name US made .22 bolt gun will work as a youth trainer. I would look for an old Remmington Model 510 Target Master. It's a single shot bolt gun designed for just this purpose.

If you can find a decent priced Sako Quad it wouldn't be a bad choice. Swap the barrel later on for a 22WMR or 17HMR and go hunt some turkeys with it.

The CZ Scout is an excellent .22 for kids.

I was leaning strongly towards the 10/22 from listening to other adults as to their favorite rifle and having been shooting them for years.

After looking at a few of these guns mentioned I'm really thinking a bolt action may be the way to go. I like the idea of him not being able to pull the trigger several times in a row and accidentally firing multiple rounds. He won't be shooting this without me 6" from him for a a few years.

He's still quite young at 6, but he quickly figured out he can't kill anything with his bb gun. We often see and pass on bobcats and coyotes from the stand cause I don't want to shoot one with the 06, but may let him take a shot with a .22 if he can get pretty proficient with it. Would also love to take him out and let "him" shoot a couple rabbits for dinner.

Tried to take him turkey hunting last year and let him shoot the .410. He shot nearly a box of shells the weekend before and didn't want to stop shooting. He had really nice patterns in the head neck region out to 25 yards. Then one shot he put his cheek on the stock, and he didn't want to shoot anymore.

He's been begging me for a "bigger gun" so he can actually go hunting. Just not sure what's the best starting point. I really want to get him more involved while he's still interested.

Totally agree. Also one of the things is that bolt actions tend to be much nicer looking and feeling guns than the semi-autos, and they more often come in wood stocks.

I would look into a 22mag also...just sayin...shells are higher but they have got some serious pop compared to the 22lr

But for alot of shootin practice be better to stay with cheaper ammo....

My son shot a Colt AR style .22 recently. If he did not already have a .22 I would get him one. That adjustable stock was key and he really took to that gun quick. He looked really comfortable shooting it.

At 6 years old, the Crickett, or something similar would be the best bet for fit, if you are wanting to stay with the bolt gun. My son loved his Crickett and still shoots it at the range today, at 12. He shoots his M&P more, but he still likes to shoot the Cricket. I have taken a few of his friends to the range with us and had them shoot the Crickett to start with.

The Rugers and the like are too heavy for a six year old. The length of pull is too long too. Length of pull on the Crickett is 12". He will not outgrow it that quickly.

If I were you I would look at the Remingston Speedmaster. They are great .22's and the nice thing is they will shoot Shorts, Longs, and Long Rifle. That gives you a few more ammo choices and the Shorts are really quiet.

Don't know how the quality is since Remington bought them out, but the older Marlin 39A is a gun that can be passed down for generations to come.

For that price, probably the CZ 452. The "best" would be a Volquartsen with Anschutz a close second. I really love my new ISSC SCAR 22lr at $500. That is a sweet little gun!

rossi and H&R have lots of combos so he can have his choose of barrels for hunting.
