I have a Remington 243 in the package gun series not sure of the model number. I shot it several times ans was surprised at teh acuuracy since it seems sub par in the manufacturing end. After shooting i removed the bolt, cleaned and reassmbled. i got it from the ay the other day and the action works fine until you try yo chamber a round. Is will almost close but will not. If you take the round out it wil seat fine. But as soon as you try to chamber a round it is a no go. It has to be something simple please help. One more thing. Even though it will not chamber and close on a round it ejects it fine.

Have you tied with more than one bullet?

If it worked before you took it apart and cleaned it and not after then you changed something, Not sure what that could be, try it again and see if you get it right.

Are these reloads or factory. I have a custom 300 which does the same thing with some of my reloads. In my situation, I think it was to do with bullet seating depth.

Have you tried any other brands of ammo?

I hope the Remington 770 in a .243 is a good one cause the boy has one wrapped and under the tree now for X mas. Now you got me worried.

Not trying to be funny or insult you, but have you looked down the barrel to make sure there are no obstructions and double checked that those 243 rounds are not 308 by mistake?

I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

Are you using the same rounds that you shot before (where everything worked fine ?) Verify that you have the correct ammo, then try inserting one directly into chamber (without using magazine or bolt). Push it forward with your finger- making sure it seats all the way. then try closing bolt. Results?

If you have a wood stock it is likely the screw that holds the stock on under the action. I had this problem. I took the stock off to clean it and put it back on and could not close the bolt when chambering a round. The screw has simply gone into far into the action because of over tightening the screw and the wood gives because its soft. Just file down the end of the screw on a bench grinder very carefully to shorten the length of the screw and you are good to go.

I would bet your extractor is not installed correctly after cleaning or broken. The Remmington is a push feed so if it is grabbing the round while shoving the round in the bolt will not close all the way, but it will still extract the round. This can and will happen if you have a messed up extractor.

Check for rust in the chamber, I had a rifle I hunted around the coast with for a week. I actually had no issues loading rounds, but once fired, it wouldnt extract. More than likely it will be amassed around the shoulder area. And if you cleaned it since last firing, check for cleaning patch debris.

Thanks guys great information. No rust, barrell clear and clean. When i say cleaned it i removed the bolt cleaned lightly and replaced the bolt. I am using factory ammo and did try more than just one round. The bullets are the same lot that i sighted it in with and tried at least 4.

The bolt was just wiped down not broken down. It is a synthetic stock.

About the gun being a good one it is the 770 with a stainless barrell. i will tell you that Remington is missing the mark on these. The bolt is loose and moves around nothing like the old Remingtons. But as far as accuracy this gun or barrell is one of the straigtest shooting i have ever seen. It is a tact driver. At 100 rounds stack on top of each other. What they missed in overal moving part quality they did not skemp on this barrell. That is unless i just have the rare tact driver in this model.

I will take it completey apart tonight and go over it with a fine tooth comb but the extrator theory sound most probable.

I had a 770 I had an issue with not chambering rounds. Sent it to Remington through Gander Mountain, two weeks later got it back, never had a problem with it again. Was a great go to truck gun.

Make sure a cleaning patch (or part of one) is not hung up in there.
