Have a new Chessie that is 2.5 years old and has been through a good bit of training. He is a rescue dog and is very obedient for the most part. It was represented to me that he had been through hunt training and I have no doubt that this is true. He has a heckuva nose and this makes the T a little hard to work since he smells all three locations of dummies. He is rusty on his remote sit and desire to follow hand signals.
Now, before you tell me how hard headed Chessies are, be advised that he has a genuine desire to please and appears to be extremely intelligent. He does not like an e-coller even at the lowest of settings. It tends to cow him down. I could not be happier with a dog except for these rather minor problems. My lab that died had me spoiled about hand signals.
So, do any of you have experience with Chessies and how would you firm up his remote sit without a coller? My past experience is all with Labs and this guy is definitely a different kind of dog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I know what you're thinkin'.....and you're wrong!

Setting aside the bloodline information I do see a problem in what was written in your post. That is the cowering to the collar even on a low setting. Beginning with the litter they are corrected by momma with a sharp bite to the side of the head. Then you get pup and begin training and you do your corrections with a pinch collar leading up to a shock collar. If he is cowering to the collar then a step along the training way was missed or performed incorrectly. With any step missed along the way your pup will not learn how to take a correction and work through the correction. I would look back in his training and see who force fetched the dog or who collar conditioned the dog. I would suspect the problem is in one of these two areas. Without these remote handling will always be trouble.

i don't think chessies are really much worse than any other dog. you get stubborn dogs out of all breeds, some easy and some hard headed.
to your question though i think you need to go to the check cord and run the T with it on when you whistle stop. Be sure to wear gloves and get you a 50 or 75 foot check cord, and run the T, whistle to sit, and grab the cord thus stopping the dog with the cord. i'm sure TXPH knows what i'm referring to above. This is generally how I start a dog on remote sit anyway, then slowly add the collar. in your case it can be done without a collar at all in my opinion.

I am missing something here. How do you transition from a 75 foot check cord to an e-collar for remote sitting?

GWT, call Allan. No joke, his boy jake is as good a hunting retriever as I have hunted with. My pup from him is just like jake, looks and attitude. to say the least I am really looking forward to the next year of training. It should be pretty easy. kirk

Thanks guys. I will be calling you soon TXPH. The old dog really likes SallySue (Rodney). In fact, he crawled in SallySue's truck the other day and wanted to ride shotgun with him! Luckily, SallySue decided he did not need to take him on a ride or I might have lost my dog. I think to a certain extent Chase is testing me for what I will tolerate. There are some things that he did over the weekend that made me think that he was just being a typical Chessie and testing the boundaries. More later, I have some work to get out. But, thanks to each of you for your thoughtful responses.

Yes, I do believe that he is like his master....a breast man. He really prefers his fake mallard to round bumpers. Feels more like a real breast, no pun intended.
